Another critical factor that plays a part in susceptibility to colds is age. A study done
by the University of Michigan School of Public Health revealed particulars that seem to hold true for the general population. Infants are the most cold-ridden group, averaging more than six colds in their first year. Boys have more colds than girls up to age three. After the age of three, girls are more susceptible than boys, and teenage girls average three colds a year to boys' two.

The general incidence of colds continues to decline into maturity. Elderly people who are in good health have as few as one or two colds annually. One exception is found among people in their twenties, especially women, who show a rise in cold infections, because people in this age group are most likely to have young children. Adults who delay having children until their thirties and forties experience the same sudden increase in cold infections.

The study also found that economics plays an important role. As income increases, the frequency at which colds are reported in the family decreases. Families with the lowest income suffer about a third more colds than families at the upper end. Lower income generally forces people to live in more cramped quarters than those typically occupied by wealthier people, and crowding increases the opportunities for the cold virus to travel from person to person. Low income may also adversely influence diet. The degree to which poor nutrition affects susceptibility to colds is not yet clearly established, but an inadequate diet is suspected of lowering resistance generally.

The paragraph before this passage most probably deals with ______ .

A.minor diseases other than colds

B.the recommended treatment of colds

C.a factor that affects susceptibility to colds

D.methods of preventing colds among elderly people

听力原文: [29] Moving away from newspapers, let's now focus on magazines. Now the first ma
gazine was a little periodical called The Review, and it was started in London in 1704. It looked a lot like the newspapers of the time. But in terms of its content, it was much different. [30] Newspapers were concerned mainly with news events, but The Review focused on important domestic issues of the day, as well as the policies of the government. Now in England at that time, people could still be thrown in jail for publishing articles that were critical of the king. And that's what happened to Daniel Defoe. He was the outspoken founder of The Review. Defoe actually wrote the first issue of The Review from prison. You see, he had been arrested because of his writings that criticized the policies of the Church of England, which was headed by the king. After his release, Defoe continued to produce The Review and the magazine started to appear on a more frequent schedule, about three times a week. It didn't take long for other magazines to start popping up. [31] In 1709, a magazine called The Tattler began publication. This new magazine contained a mixture of news, poetry, political analysis, and philosophical essays.

(30)

A.Early newspapers in England.

B.The early history of magazines.

C.The life of Daniel Defoe.

D.Differences between newspapers and magazines.

Experts say the first three years of a child’s life are the most intensive period of l
anguage and speech development.Language and communication skills are believed to develop best in an environment that is rich with sounds and sights.Experts say children should repeatedly hear the speech and language of other people.

America ’s National Institutes of Health says evidence suggests there are important periods of speech and language development in children. The ability to learn a language will be more difficult if these periods pass without early contact with a language.

The first signs of communication happen during the first few days of life, when a baby learns that crying will bring food and attention.Research shows that most children recognize the general sounds of their native language by six months of age.By that time, a baby usually begins to make speech-like sounds. These sounds become a kind of nonsense speech over time.

By the end of their first year, most children are able to say a few simple words, although they may not understand the meaning of the words.By 18 months of age, most children can say between eight and ten words.By two years of age, most children are able to make simple statements.By ages three, four and five, the number of words a child can understand quickly increases. It is at these ages that children begin to understand the rules of language.
