Passage Two

Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage.

Tides are created mainly by the pull of the moon on the earth. The moon's pull causes water in the oceans to be a little deeper at a point closest to the moon and also at a point farthest from the moon, on the opposite side of the earth. These two tidal “waves” follow the apparent movement of the moon around the earth and strike nearly every coast line at intervals of about twelve hours and twenty-five minutes. After reaching a high point, the water level goes down gradually for a little more than six hours and then begins to rise toward a new high point. Hence, most coast lines have two tides a day, and the tides occur fifty minutes later each day. Differences in the coast line and in channels in the ocean bottom may change the time that the tidal wave reaches different points along the same coast line. The difference in water level between high and low tide varies from day to day according to the relative positions of the sun and the moon. The sun also exerts a pull on the earth, although it is only about haft as strong as the pull of the tides arise higher and when they pull at right angles to one another. the tide is lower. The formation of the coast line and variations in the weather are additional factors which can affect the height of tides. Some sections of the coast are shaped in such a way as to cause much higher tides than are experienced in other areas. A strong wind blowing toward the shore may also cause tides to the higher.

Which of the following is right according to the passage?

A. Some coast lines do not have two tides each day.

B. Tides are not affected by the shape of coast line.

C. The sun has as much effect on tides as does the moon.

D. Tides usually rise to the same land day after day.

The geology of the Earth's surface is dominated by the particular properties of water. Pre
sent on Earth in solid, liquid, and gaseous states, water is exceptionally reactive. It dissolves, transports, and precipitates many chemical compounds and is constantly modifying the face of the Earth. Evaporated from the oceans, water vapor forms clouds, some of which are transported by wind over the continents. Condensation from the clouds provides the essential agent of continental erosion: rain. Precipitated onto the ground, the water trickles down to form brooks, streams, and rivers, constituting what are called the hydrographic network. This immense polarized network channels the water toward a single receptacle: an ocean. Gravity dominates this entire step in the cycle because water tends to minimize its potential energy by running from high altitudes toward the reference point, that is, sea level. The rate at which a molecule of water passes though the cycle is not random but is a measure of the relative size of the various reservoirs. If we define residence time as the average time for awater molecule to pass through one of the three reservoirs — atmosphere, continent, and ocean — we see that the times are very different. A water molecule stays, on average, eleven days in the atmosphere, one hundred years on a continent and forty thousand years in the ocean. This last figure shows the importance of the ocean as the principal reservoir of the hydrosphere but also the rapidity of water transport on the continents. A vast chemical separation process takes places during the flow of water over the continents. Soluble ions such as calcium, sodium, potassium, and some magnesium are dissolved and transported. Insoluble ions such as aluminum, iron, and silicon stay where they are and form thethin, fertile skin of soil on which vegetation can grow. Sometimes soils are destroyed and transported mechanically during flooding. The erosion of the continents thus results from two closely linked and interdependent processes, chemical erosion and mechanical erosion. Their respective interactions and efficiency depend on different factors. The word "modifying" in line 4 is closest in meaning toA.changing

Starman, the model of a person riding a cherry-red Tesla Roadster (特斯拉敞篷车) through space, has made his closestapproach ever to Mars. The elettric roadster and its passenger were attached to the top of a Falcon Heavy rocket during the SpaceXrocket's first test launch on 6 February 2018.Two years later, the Falcon Heavy rocket and the vehicle at its tip are making theirsecond trip around the Sun.Mr.McDowell,a Harvard astrophysicist, found that Starman passed 7.4 million kilometers from Marsat 06:25 GMT 7 October,2020.The closest recent approach between the Earth and Mars was 56 million kilometers in 2003,thoughthe planets are often hundreds of millions of miles apart depending on where they are in their orbits. No one can see the FalconHeavy rocket at its current distance, but orbits over periods of a few years are fairly easy to tell, and Mr.McDowell used data abouthow the rocket was moving when it left the Earth's gravity behind to locate its recent movements exactly.Last time Starman circledthe Sun,McDowell said,it crossed Mars' orbit while the Mars was quite far away. But this time the crossing lined up with a fairlyclose approach, though still not close enough to feel a strong tug from Mars, which means it won't be taken away by this red star.Atthis point in time,if you were able to go look at the Roadster,it would probably look pretty different. The strong solar radiationenvironment between the planets would probably have destroyed all the exposed organic materials.Without the Earth s atmosphericand magnetic (磁场的) protection, even the plastics and catbon-fibre materials would start to break up.Over the course of decadesor centuries, the car will end up with its aluminum (铝) frame and hard glass parts- -that S assuming that none of them getdestroyed in knocks with passing space rocks.

(1)What can we infer from the first two paragraphs?()

A、Starman is now circling around the Mars in its orbit.

B、Starman has returned to the earth after travelling 7.4 million kilometers.

C、Starman has traveled closest to the sun since 2020.

D、Starman has set out on its second trip around the Sun.

(2)How did McDowell manage to locate Starman?()

A、By analyzing data about the rocket's movement.

B、By seking proesional help from SpaceX.

C、By predicting its future orbit around the Earth.

D、By keeping Starman under visual observation.

(3)Which of the following statements about Starman is true?()

A、Starman is a dummy who is ready to made the third trip around the sun.

B、Statman is a spaceman sent by scientists to make a trip to Mars.

C、Starman was quite close to Mars on its first trip around the sun.

D、Starman closecly approached Mars on its second trip around the sun.

(4)What does the underlined word“tug”in Paragraph 4 probably mean?()

A、Reaction.

B、Protection.

C、Drill.

D、Pull.

(5)What will happen to Starman in decades or centuries?()

A、Starman is likely reduced to at most its frame and glass.

B、It will return to Earth and be modified for next space mission.

C、It will return to SpaceX on Eatth and be reused for next mission.

D、It is circling around the sun and will fnally crash ontoit.
