Animals other than humans have not developed communications comparable to human langua

ge. But is it possible that other animals have the capacity to learn a language if they are adequately taught? Obviously, this is a fascination notion. The idea of communicating directly with another species has long been a part of human folklore and children’s fantasies. But on a scientific level, the question of whether animals can learn a language is important primarily because it relates to the controversy()between the cognitive and the learning approaches to language. If language is dependent on and is actually an outgrowth of the intellectual structure of the human mind, there is the strong supposition that only humans are capable of using language. Therefore, Noam Chomsky and other psycholinguists have argued that only humans can learn a language, while most behaviorists feel that with sufficient patience it should be possible to teach an animal some sort of language. Although the two schools of thought clearly differ on this point, it is not really a crucial test of the two theories. If a chimpanzee can master a simple language all it would mean is that the chimp’s intellectual capacity and brain structure are more similar to ours than we thought. It would not necessarily imply that our intellectual structure is unimportant in our own mastery of language. Thus, teaching an animal language is an impressive demonstration of the power of learning techniques, but it is not evidence that language is developed entirely through learning. On the other hand, the question of whether other animals can learn a language is fascination in its own right, aside from its value as a test of the two theories of language development. Accordingly, whatever one’s position on the theoretical dispute, we must consider training an animal to use language a dramatic accomplishment.

B. Other animals simply could master a language.

D. Language is developed by learning.

B. animals have not developed communications system

C. given enough patience, a man should be able to teach an animal some sort of language

D. only human beings can learn language

A. human’s intellectual structure is not important

C. the learning techniques are much more important

D. language is developed completely by learning

39.The main idea of paragraph two is ___________.

Every second in the United States alone, more than 250 animals are slaughtered for food, a
dding up to more than 8 billion animals each year. Reducing the amount of meat in one's diet is nutritionally, environmentally, and ethically beneficial.

People who eat meat usually have weaker immune systems compared to those of vegetarians. Meat has been directly linked to diabetes, obesity, arthritis, and many other illnesses. Furthermore, meat-esters are at a higher risk for diseases, including cancer, and they are more likely to die from these diseases. Critics say that a meatless diet does not provide enough nutrients, especially protein and iron. Actually, according to A Teen's Guide to Going Vegetarian, by Judy Krizmanic, protein is found in almost every food, and iron appears in many vegetables. Getting enough nutrients in a meat-reduced diet should not be difficult. A 1988study found that some of the highest pesticide residues appear in meat and eggs. Diets including more fruits and vegetables will only make people healthier.

Some skeptics believe that there will be a shortage of food if animals are not eaten. In fact, the opposite is true. More than 80% of the corn and 95% of the oats grown in the U.S. are fed to livestock. The world's cattle alone consume enough food to equal the caloric needs of 8.7 billion people, more than the entire human population. One half of the water used in the Unites States also goes to livestock; 2,50 gallons of water produces only 1 lb. of beef. If people eat less meat and more plants, the amount of available food will increase.

Many people become vegetarians because they feel that eating animals is unethical. 90% of these animals are raised in confinement. Chickens and other birds have only about half a square foot of space each, and since they are raised so close together, a lot blade is used to cut off their beaks to prevent them from pecking each other to death. Likewise, pigs that are repressed will bite each other's tails, so both their teeth and tails are removed as soon as they are born.

Eating animals is hazardous in numerous ways. Even a slight reduction in meat intake is better than nothing at all. Consuming less meat is beneficial to the health of animals, the health of people, and to the health of the world.

Why do some people become vegetarians?

A.They feel that eating animals is Unethical.

B.There are fewer livestock available due to the environmental pollution.

C.The consumption of meat will lead to financial problem.

D.Being a vegetarian is beneficial to the protection of water.

Passage Four

Most people do not think of fishes and other sea animals as having voices, and of those who are aware of the fact that many of them can "speak", few understand that these "conversations" have significance. Actually, their talk may be as meaningful as much of our own. For example, some sea animals use their "voices" to locate their food in the ocean expanses (广阔的区域); others use their "voices" to let their fellows know of their locations; and still others, as a means of obtaining mates. Sometimes, "speaking" may even mean the difference between life and death to a sea animal. It appears in some cases that when a predator (食肉动物) approaches, the prey (被捕的动物) depends on no more than the sounds it makes to escape.

Fish sounds are important to man, also. By listening to them, he can learn a great deal about he habits of creatures that make them, the size of the School they form, the patterns of their migrations, and the nature of the environments in which they live. He can also apply this nformation to the more effective utilization of the listening spots he has set up to detect enemy submarines (潜水艇). A knowledge of fish sounds can avoid confusion and unneeded effort when a "new" sound is picked up and the sound sentry (哨兵) must decide whether or not to call an alarm.

46. Among the people who know that many sea animals have voices, few ______.

A. know the meaning of their conversations

B. realize that they can communicate with each other

C. realize that they can make speeches

D. could understand their conversations

Generally speaking, people want to keep a wild animal as a pet for one of many reasons: th
ey want to impress other people by owning an unusual, uncommon animal as a pet. In no case is the happiness of the animal at the heart of the matter.

If you do want to own a wild animal, for instance a fox (usually a little larger than your average house cat), you have to take this test first: go to your nearest Humane Society Shelter and bring home a grown cat and a very active dog. Raise them and be with them; consider them your best friends. Do not leave them alone for more than 9 hours in any given day; do not hit them or shout at them; and do not abuse them in any way. If, after two years, both animal are alive and are still with you without your caging them or locking them in a part of your home most of the day, then maybe you have what it takes to own a wild animal.

If the test sounds stupid or unworkable, or if you just can’t bring yourself to stand such unlovable animals for two years, then you are not suited to owning a fox.

The problem here is in the definition of the word pet. A pet is something you keep in your house or around your yard as a companion---- a companion who is usually prevented from escaping one way or another. Some animals---- dogs and cats, will voluntarily stay with a human even if given the chance to get away. In this sense, dogs and cats are true pets. Please don’t make the life of some wild animals a living hell by trying to raise one as a pet.

Which reason is true for people keeping a wild animal as a pet in the passage?

A.They want to show off to other people

B.Wild animals are orderly.

C.They just want to keep a wild animal for business purpose

D.They love wild animals heartily.

To pass the test, you must make it certain that ____.A.you take the trying animals with you most of the time

B.you are kind to the trying animals

C.the trying animals are still in good condition in two years.

D.all of the above

It can be inferred that of all the animals mentioned in the passage a ____ is the most difficult one to keep as a pet.A.wild pig

B.fox

C.tiger

D.dog

According to the author, you can raise a wild animal if you ____.A.think the test ridiculous

B.can’t bear dogs and cats

C.may work more than 9 hours

D.may raise the trying animals well for 2 years.

What does the word “ hell” in the last sentence mean?A.The miserable place after death

B.A place of great suffering

C.Sufferers in a miserable place

D.Evil and dark forces.
