Although I had stayed in England for over a year, it was difficult for me to understand
the British mind. Traveling to then office every day by train, I watched people hiding their faces behind newspapers. They rarely talked to each other, occasionally lifting their eyebrows to look at their fellow passengers. On the way to the office one morning, a man collapsed in my compartment. At Waterloo, everybody left, but I stayed with him until the ambulance arrived and was an hour late getting to the office. I was told that it was not my job to look after strangers.

I found that many did not even look after their own parents who were old and helpless. In India, it is the duty of the children to look after their parent and old relatives. While serving a meal, my mother always gave food to the elderly relatives and children first and ate whatever was left over. The elderly never felt isolated. They lived with their families and contributed to the happiness of the house.

Third culture kid is a term in English that is used to describe children who have grown up
in a different culture to that of their parents. There are great things about experiencing such a unique childhood. Third culture kids can also face many challenges.

I was born in England, to English parents. When I was two years old my dad got a new job in Poland. Since then I have lived in four other countries around the world. Although I have a British passport,I sometimes don&39;t feel very English at all!

One of the best things about moving around a lot when 1 was younger experiencing many diverse cultures and countries. I was able to try different foods, learn different languages, experience different traditions and meet people from different backgrounds. I am also lucky to have friends all over the world that 1 keep in regular contact with.

However, it wasn&39;t always easy. It often felt like I had only just settled in to the new school city and culture before my parents told me we were moving again. It was also very disorientating to have an English passport, but not feel very English at all. Because 1 had no access to English culture, returning 4home, often felt like visiting a foreign country. Happily, now l feel more at home in England—although the question, “where are you from?” still confuses me!

Before the 1970s, college students were treated as children. So many colleges ran in loco
parentis system. " In loco parentis" is a Latin term, meaning " in the place of a parent. " It describes when someone else accepts responsibility to act in the interests of a child. This idea developed long ago in British common law to define the responsibility of, teachers toward their students. For years, American courts upheld in loco parentis in cases such as Gott versus Berea College in 1913. Gott owned a restaurant off campus. Berea threatened to expel students who ate at places not owned by the school. The Kentucky high court decided that in loco parentis justified that rule. In loco parentis meant that male and female college students usually had to live in separate buildings. Women had to be back at their dorms by ten or eleven on school nights. But in the 1960s, students began to protest rules and restrictions like these. At the same time, courts began to support students who were being punished for political and social dissent. In 1960, Alabama State College expelled six students who took part in a civil rights demonstration. They sued the school and won. After that, it became harder and harder to defend in loco parentis. At that time, students were not considered adults until 21. Then, in 1971, the 24th amendment to the Constitution set the voting age at eighteen. So in loco parentis no longer really applied. Slowly, colleges began to treat students not as children, but as adults. Students came to be seen as consumers of educational services. Gary Dickstein, an assistant vice president at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, says in loco parentis is not really gone. It just looks different. Todays parents, he says, are often heavily involved in students lives. They are known as "helicopter parents". They always seem to hover over their children. Gary Dickstein says these parents are likely to question decisions, especially about safety issues and grades. They want to make sure their financial investment is not being wasted.

Blocks of "high-rise" flats have been built in large numbers in London and in many other b
ig cities. Just after the Second World War these big, twenty-to-thirty storey buildings, hundreds of feet in height, were thought to be the ideal solution to the housing problem.
