THREE THINGS TO BRING YOU MORE FRIENDS Do you lack friends Do you want to make more fr
iends If so, you may read on… There's a certain beauty in being a lone wolf. You have more time to do the things you want to do. But if you want to make more friends, and do things together with them, please consider these suggestions on how to meet people and form. strong, lasting friendships. Spend more time around people and talk to them. If you want to make friends, you first need to put yourself out in order to meet people. Friends seldom come knocking on your door while you sit at home playing computer games. Participate in an online community. You don't necessarily need to have a lot of common interests with people in order to make friends with them. Social networking sites such as Wechat, Facebook, Twitter, and My Space are great way to meet new people and learn more about the people you meet. Join a sports team. A common misunderstanding about this is that you have to be really good at playing a particular sport in order to make friends with others on the team, but not all teams are so competitive. Newspapers, along with reporting the news, instruct, entertain, and give opinions. An impo
rtant way for reading a large, big-city newspaper is knowing how to take it apart. Can you find these separate sections: world news, national and local news, sports, business, entertainment, opinions, classified ads? Does your paper have other sections?

News stories give facts, not the author's opinions. Editorials do the opposite; you can expect an editorial to take sides. Some newspaper editorials have a by-line with the author's name, but many newspapers have unsigned editorials. These reflect the opinions of the publisher or editor.

You can be a better reader if you know what to expect in a newspaper. For example, you can expect headlines to omit unnecessary words. You can expect to find the most important facts in the lead paragraph (the first paragraph) of a news story. You can expect important news items to be on the front page. You can expect less important items to be on the inside pages.

Most of all, the more you know about current news, the more you will understand what is in the newspaper; important stories are generally presented one day and followed up on following days. So, an important way for reading newspapers is reading one frequently.

To read a large newspaper, a good way is ______.

A.to read it section be section

B.to do some paper-cutting

C.to find separate sections and read accordingly

D.to predict what is inside the newspaper

Though Chinese people may want to get to know Americans, they often feel awkward talking t
o Americans. The language barrier is an obvious problem. However, there are other problems. Many Chinese are hesitant to speak with people that they do not know well or types of people who are outside their previous experiences. Besides, Chinese people often do not know what to talk to Americans about or how to keep the conversation moving.

If you want to get to know Americans, one important piece of advice is this: make the first move yourself. In the United States, it is common and acceptable to start conversations, even with strangers or casual acquaintances. Don' t wait around for an American to talk to you. Start a conversation yourself. Ask questions. Show that you are interested in getting to know them. Of course, not every conversation will result in a friendship, but if you don't start conversations, you will have much less chance of making friends.

If someone seems friendly but you have only exchanged greet/rigs, try starting a conversation. There are a number of possible subjects for casual conversation. Americans talk about their work if they are employed, their classes and majors if they are students, their families, their hobbies and leisure time activities, sports, cur- rent events, and the weather, among other topics. If you are talking to a stranger, you can ask, "What kind of work do you do?" or "Where do you work?" If you know that the other person is a student, you can ask, "What classes are you taking?" and "What is your major?" You should also be prepared to answer questions like these in a conversation. Also, many Americans are interested in China, so you should be able to talk about China and Chinese culture in English.

When you ask questions in a conversation, don't skip around from one topic to another. Follow up one question with a related one. You might ask an American, "Do you have any children?" If the American says, "Yes," don't follow up with a question about work. Ask another question about the children, such as how many children there are or how old they are.

Which of the following is the reason why Chinese people feel awkward talking to Americans?

A.They don't like to talk to strangers.

B.They don't know enough about some topics.

C.They often speak English with a strong accent.

D.They don't talk to them in an appropriate manner.
