Passage Two

In 2000, with little but a bar and a church left to make it a destination, tiny St. James, Nebraska, was taken off state highway maps. Then the church closed, and the small farm village in the state’s northeast corner looked set to just disappear. Thanks to five devoted women, it didn’t.

In May 2001, after meeting with staff from the Center for Rural Affairs, the friends—Louis Guy, Vicky Koch, Jeanette Pinkelman, Mary Rose Pinkelman and Violet Pinkelman—opened a weekend market for vendors(小商贩) to sell handcrafts and local food.

“We felt like, what can we do to bring the community together?” says Mary Rose Pinkelman, “We decided to make a place to sell local goods.” They set up shop in the church school, which, though closed for nearly 40 years, had been well maintained. The first weekend, 16 vendors look over an old classroom. The result was an instant hit. Today, the market draws up to 70 vendors----who sell such items as homemade jellies, baked goods, hand-woven rugs, and farm-grown produce----and what Pinkelman calls an unexpected number of visitors. In the process, the market has made St. James a destination again, putting it back on the state road map.

40. According to Para. 1, what fate was St. James Nebraska suffering?

A The replacement of the church school

B The disappearance from highway maps

C The closedown of the bar

D The set-up of a market

A SPEECH ABOUT MY HOMETOWN

My lovely hometown is located on the south shore of an island. It's a small town with only about 9,000 people and an area of about 3.8 square miles.

First, I want to talk about the people in the neighborhood. Generally speaking, people are very nice here, especially in summer. I feel that in summer everyone is in a great mood, and very generous. For example, one summer afternoon, I was at the gas station filling up my car and was short of money. Generously an old gentleman gave me the money to pay the gas attendant. That's the type of people you can expect from my hometown.

The greatest part about the town, in my opinion, is the location. The Great Bay is five minutes away from my house and it's fantastic. Another great thing is how close everybody lives to each other. With it being such a small town, all my friends live five minutes away, which is a great advantage to me and everyone else. Lastly, the nightlife is great. On any Saturday night every bar is packed with people, so there's always something going on.

So far I've explained the good side of my hometown, but there are also some boring things about it. It is great in summer, but it is a different story in winter. When winter comes around, the town turns into a “ghost town”. This is because there is nowhere to go. The only thing we have is a shopping center. It would be nice if we had a few more options to choose from.

操作提示:正确选T,错误选F。

1. My lovely hometown is located on the north shore of an island. {T; F}

2. Once I was at the gas station filling up my car and didn't have enough money with me.{T; F}

3. I don't think it a great advantage that all my friends live five minutes away.{T; F}

4. On any Saturday night every bar is full of people.{T; F}

5. When winter comes around, we still have many options to choose from. {T; F}

In a survey conducted by research firm Harris Interactive, 71% of Americans said that spen
ding extra money on travel during the holiday season is worthwhile--so long as it affords them time with family and friends. But just because traveling may be the right thing to do, that doesn't mean it has to be the expensive thing to do. Traveling involves many hidden costs that, once you're aware of them, are easy to spot--and even easier to eliminate.

To start, consider transportation fees. For example, if you're driving, fill up the gas tank before traveling on the highway, where it's much costlier, says Clarky Davis, a personal finance expert. And make sure your car is in good condition by checking your heating vents, keeping up with routine maintenance and ensuring your tires are properly inflated, all of which help the ear achieve favorable fuel economy. Furthermore, not only does a tow car(救援车) cause inconvenience; it also means extra costs.

For those opting to fly, first, be aware of how much it costs to check a bag. Most airlines are charging for every checked bag by weight, but prices vary from carrier to carrier. If you can manage to pack everything into a carry-on, you'll save at least $15. Brooke Ferencsik, a travel expert, suggests considering secondary airports when booking your flight. These airports often are less crowded and frequently offer cheaper tickets.

And when it comes to your actual destination, don't assume that hotels are going to cut back on fees simply because they're desperate to draw customers. "They won't be adding or increasing fees, but they won't be decreasing them either," says Ferencsik. The best defense against extra fees is to read about the hotel's rates online, before you make a reservation. "Be aware of surcharges for everything from housekeeping to groundskeeping to use of the in-room safe," says Ferenesik. Some hotels even install a sensor(传感器) within the mini bar, charging guests for simply touching the items, let alone eating or drinking them.

"From airlines to hotels to rental ears, they've all got hidden fees you need to be aware of," says Ferencsik. "Do your homework and ask questions."

It is found that 71% of Americans regard it as worthwhile to______.

A.spend money on souvenirs while traveling with family and friends

B.accept hidden costs while traveling with family and friends

C.travel with family and friends during the holiday season

D.travel with family and friends so as to please them
