People's ideas about cats and dogs vary from culture to culture

(汉译英)People's ideas about cats and dogs vary from culture to culture. For many people in the US and Europe, they are pets (宠物). People keep them and treat them like members of their families, and there are also special shops that sell food for pets. Yet in other parts of the world cats and dogs are treated differently. There, people hold a practical attitude toward these animals, who not only work for people but also are killed for food. People own cats and dogs because cats keep away mice and dogs are ideal、animals that . help guard their property. They also love these animals, but seldom see them as equal to family members.

The Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, ratified in 1868, prohibits st
ate governments from denying citizens the "equal protection of the laws". Although precisely what the framers of the amendment meant by this equal protection clause remains unclear, all interpreters agree that the framers' immediate objective was to provide a constitutional warrant for the Civil Rights Act of 1866, which guaranteed the citizenship of all persons born in the United States and subject to United States jurisdiction. This declaration, which was echoed in the text of the Fourteenth Amendment, was designed primarily to counter the Supreme Court's ruling in Dred Scott v. Sanford that Black people in the United States could be denied citizenship. The act was vetoed by President An- drew Johnson, who argued that the Thirteenth Amendment, which abolished slavery, did not provide Congress with authority, to extend citizenship and equal protection the freed slaves. Although Congress promptly overrode Johnson's veto, supporters of the act sought to ensure its constitutional foundations with the passage of the Fourteenth Amendment.

The broad language of the amendment strongly suggests that its framers were proposing to write into the Constitution not a laundry list of specific civil rights but a principle of equal citizenship that forbids organized society from treating any individual as a member of an inferior class. Yet for the first eight decades of the amendment's existence, the Supreme Court's interpretation of the amendment betrayed this ideal of equality. In the Civil Rights Cases of 1883, for example, the Court in- vented the "state action" limitation, which asserts that "private" decisions by owners of public accommodations and other commercial businesses to segregate their facilities are insulated from file reach of the Fourteenth Amendment' s guarantee of equal protection under the law. After the Second World War, a judicial climate more hospitable to equal protection claims culminated in the Supreme Court's ruling in Brown V. Broad of Education that racially segregated schools violated the equal protection clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.

According to this passage, which of the following is correct?

A.By presenting a list of specific rights, framers of the Fourteenth Amendment were attempting to provide a constitutional basis for abroad judicial protection of the principle of equal citizenship.

B.Interpreters of the Fourteenth Amendment have not reached consensus with regard to what its framers meant by the equal protection clause.

C.Not until after the Second World War did the Supreme Court begin to interpret the Fourteenth Amendment in a manner consistent with the principle of equal citizenship that it ex- presses.

D.The framers of the Fourteenth Amendment were aware that the phrase "equal protection of the laws" had broad implications.

Passage Three

Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage.

In a family where the roles of men and women are not sharply separated and where many household tasks are shared to a greater or lesser extent, notions of superiority are hard to maintain. The pattern of sharing in tasks and in decisions makes for equality, and this in turn leads to further sharing. In such a home, the growing boy and girl learn to accept that equality more easily than did their parents and to prepare more fully for participation in a world characterized by cooperation rather than by the “battle of sexes”.

If the process goes too far and man's role is regarded as less important-and that has happened in some cases-we are as badly off as before. only in reverse. It is time to reassess the role of the man in the American family. We are getting a little tired of “Momism” -but we don't want to exchange it for a “neo-Popism” . What we need, rather,is the recognition that bringing up children involves a partnership of equals. There are signs that psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and specialists on the family are becoming more aware of the part men play and that they have decided that women should not receive all the credits-nor all the blame. We have almost given up saying that a woman's place is in the home. We are beginning, however,to analyze man's place in the home and to insist that he does have a place in it. Nor is that place irrelevant to the healthy development of the child. The family is a cooperative enterprise for which it is difficult to lay down rules, because each family needs to work out its own ways for solving its own problems. Excessive authoritarianism has unhappy consequences, whether it wears skirts or trousers, and the ideal of equal rights and equal responsibilities is pertinent(与……有关)not only to a healthy family but also to a healthy democracy.

Sharing tasks and decisions in a family leads to______.

A. monism

B. neo-popism

C. inequality

D. further sharing

For example, network 172.16.54.0 shows equal cost through both router B and router C, though in reality the cost is greater using router C. Other routers, though not shown, are connected to the 172.16.54.0 and 172.16.55.0 networks, and the same issues exist to those routers and the networks connected to them. What can be done so that data will be routed along the most optimal path in the network? ()

Refer to the exhibit. Router B and router C are pe

A. Redistribute connected interfaces on router B and router C

B. Set the maximum nu mber of equal cost paths to1 in all routers

C. When redistributing EIGRP into OSPF, set the external metric type to type E1

D. Adjust the default metrics in router B and router C so that the values are different in each router

E. None of these solut ions will fix the problem. Migrate to a single dynamic routing protocol

Education is one of the key words of our time. A man, without an education, many of us bel
ieve, is an unfortunate victim of adverse circumstances deprived of one of the greatest twentieth-century opportunities. Convinced of the importance of education, modern states "invest" in institutions of learning to get back "interest" in the form. of a large group of enlightened young men and women who are potential leaders. Education, with its cycles of instruction so carefully worked out, is punctuated by textbooks--those purchasable wells of wisdom--what would civilization be like without its benefits?

So much is certain: that we would have doctors and preachers, lawyers and defendants, marriages and births; but our spiritual outlook would be different. We would lay less stress on "facts and figures" and more on a good memory, on applied psychology, and on the capacity of a man to get along with his fellow citizens. If our educational system were fashioned after its bookless past we would have the most democratic form. of "college" imaginable. Among the people whom we like to call savages all knowledge inherited by tradition is shared by all; it is taught to every member of the tribe so that in this respect everybody is equally equipped for life.

It is the ideal condition of the "equal start" which only our most progressive forms of modem education try to regain. In primitive cultures the obligation to seek and to receive the traditional instruction is binding to all. There are no "illiterates"--if the term can be applied to people without a script--while our own compulsory school attendance became law in Germany in 1642, in France in 1806, and in England 1876, and is still non-existent in a number of "civilized" nations. This shows how long it was before we deemed it necessary to make sure that 'all our children could share in the knowledge accumulated by the "happy few" during the past centuries.

Education in the wilderness is not a matter of monetary means. All are entitled to an equal start. There is none of the hurry which, in our society, often hampers the full development of a growing personality. There, a child grows up under the ever-present attention of his parents, therefore the jungles and the grasslands know of no "juvenile delinquency". No necessity of making a living away from home results in neglect of children and no father is confronted with his inability to "buy" an education for his child.

The word "interest" in the first paragraph most probably means ______.

A.pleasure

B.returns

C.share

D.knowledge
