Passage Four

Students all over the world have to work for their education. A college education in the United States is

expensive. The costs are so high that most families begin to save for their children's education when their children are babies. Even so, many young people cannot afford to pay the expenses of full-time college work. They do not have enough money to pay for school costs. Tuition for attending the university, books for classes, and living expenses are high. There are other expenses such as chemistry and biology lab fees and special student activity fees for such things as parking permits and football tic, kets. The cost of college education increases every year. However, classrooms are still crowded with students. Some American students have scholarships or other support, but many do not.

Students from other countries have money problems to overcome, too. Because students in most international programs need to have a sponsor, they work hard to earn scholarships or special loans. International students understand the value of going to school in another country. They also know that it is difficult. Yet just as Americans choose to attend American universities in spite of the difficulty, however, it is usually possible for students from abroad to work on university campuses to pay for some of the costs of their education. Some people believe that students value their education more if they work for it.

48. Tuition for attending the university in the United States is ______.

A. inexpensive

B. high

C. free from charge

D. costless

Passage Four

"Cool" is a word with many meanings. Its old meaning is used to express a temperature that is a little bit cold. As the world has changed, the word has had many different meanings.

"Cool" can be used to express feelings of interest in almost anything. When you see a famous car in the street, maybe you will say, "It's cool. ' You may think, "He's so cool," when you see your favorite football player.

We all maximize (扩大) the meaning of "cool". You can use it instead of many words such as "new" or "surprising". Here's an interesting story we can use to show the way the word is used. A teacher asked her students to write about the waterfall (瀑布) they had visited. On one student's paper was just the one sentence, "It's so cool." Maybe he thought it was the best way to show what he saw and felt.

But the story also shows a scarcity of words. Without "cool", some people have no words to show the same meaning. So it is quite important to keep some credibility (可信性). Can you think of many other words that make your life as colorful as the word "cool"? I can. And I think they are also very cool.

46. We know that the word "cool" has had______.

A. only one meaning

B. no meanings

C. the same meaning

D. many different meanings

There are two kinds of memory: short-term and long-term. Information in long-term memory
can be recalled at a later time when it is needed. The information may be kept for days or weeks. In contrast, information in short-term memory is kept for only a few seconds, usually by repeating the information over and over.

The following experiment shows how short-term memory has been studied. Henning studied how students who are leaning English as a second language remember vocabulary. The subjects in his experiment were 75 college students. They represented all levels of ability in English: beginning, intermediate, advanced, and native-speaking students. To begin, the subjects listened to a recording of a native speaker reading a paragraph in English.

Following the recording, the subjects took a 15-question test to see which words they remembered. Each question had four choices. The subjects had to circle the word they had heard in the recording. Some of the questions had four choices that sound alike. For example, weather, whether, wither, and wetter are four words that sound a like. Some of the questions had four choices that have the same meaning. Method, way, manner, and system would be four words with the same meaning. Finally the subjects took a language proficiency test.

Henning found that students with a lower proficiency in English made more of their mistakes on words that sound alike; students with a higher proficiency made more of their mistakes on words that have the same meaning. Henning’s results suggest that beginning students hold the sound of words in their short-term memory, and advanced students hold the meaning of words in their short-term memory.

Henning made the experiment in order to study __________.

A.how students remember English vocabulary by short-term memory

B.how students learn English vocabulary

C.how to develop students’ ability in English

D.how long information in short-term memory is kept

Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?A.Information in short-term memory is different from that in long-term memory.

B.Long-term memory can be achieved only by training.

C.It is easier to test short-term memory than long-term memory.

D.Henning gave a separate test on vocabulary to his subjects.

From Henning’s results we can see that _________.A.beginners have difficulty distinguishing the pronunciation of words

B.advanced students remember words by their meaning

C.it is difficult to remember words that sound alike

D.it is difficult to remember words that have the same meaning

The word “subject” in the passage means __________.A.the college course the students take

B.the theme of the listening material

C.a branch of knowledge studied

D.the student experimented on

The passage centres on __________.A.memory

B.two kinds of memory

C.short-term memory

D.an experiment on students

The origins(起源) of baseball probably stretch back to 1839 when Abner Doubleday, a civil engineering student, laid out a diamond-shaped field at Cooperstown, New York, and attempted to standardize(使标准化) the rules governing the playing of such games as town ball and four old cat, the ancestors(祖先) of baseball. By the end of the Civil War, interest in the game had grown rapidly. Over 200 teams or clubs existed, some of which toured the country playing rivals; they belonged to a national association of "Baseball Players" that had proclaimed(宣布) a set of standard rules. These teams were amateurs(业余爱好者) or semi-professionals, but as the game waxed in popularity, it offered opportunities for profit, and the first professional team, the Cincinnati Red Stockings, appeared in 1869. Other cities soon fielded professional teams, and in 1876 the present National League was organized chiefly by Albert Spalding. Soon a rival league appeared, the American Association. Competition between the two was intense, and in 1883 they played a post-season(季后赛) contest, the first "world's series". 4. From the passage, we understand that the National League was formed in 1876 to ____.

A、reorganize the professional teams

B、enable more professional teams to be set up

C、to provide a governing authority for baseball

D、authorize amateur and professional teams to combine

5. According to the passage, at the turn of the century the only remaining baseball organizations were ____.

阅读理解Most of us can find 15 minutes or half an hour each day for some specific regu
lar activity. It may be a free period or a regular wait, say in the queue for a bus or meal --- even while eating breakfast. One famous surgeon always made it a rule to spend at least 15 minutes on general reading before he went to sleep each night.Whether he went to bed at 10 pm or 2:30 am made no difference.Even if you cannot keep to this kind of discipline, it is a good idea to make sure you always have a general interest book in your pocket.Don’t forget it should be a book which entertains you and the English must not be too difficult for you.

Nearly all “speed reading” courses have a “pacing” element --- some timing device which lets the student know how many words a minute he is reading. You can do this simply by looking at your watch every 5 or 10 minutes and noting down the page number you have reached.Check the average number of words per page for the particular book you are busy reading.Well, this is difficult at first.A friend can help by timing you over a set period, or you can read within hearing distance of a public clock which strikes the quarter hours.Pace yourself every three or four days, always with the same kind of easy, general interest book. You should soon notice your habitual w.p.m.rate creeping up.
