听力原文:M: Hi. I have a reservation for tonight.

W: And your name?

M: It's Nelson. Charles Nelson.

W: Okay. Mr. Nelson. That's a room for five, and...

M: Excuse me? Do you mean a room for five dollars? I didn't know the special was so good.

W: No, no, no. According to our records, a room for five guests was booked under your name.

M: No. No. Hold on. There must be some mistake.

W: Okay. Let's check again. Okay, Mr. Charles

C.Nelson for tonight....

M: Ah. There's the problem. My name is Charles Nelson, not Charles C. Nelson. You must have two guests under the name.

W: Okay. Let me check again. Oh. Okay. Here we are. Charles Nelson. A room for one for the 19th....

M: Wait, wait! It was for tonight. Not tomorrow night.

W: Hum. I don't think we have any rooms for tonight. There's a convention going on in town, and uh, let's see. Yeah, no rooms.

M: Ah come on! You must have something. Anything.

W: Well. Let me check my computer here. Ah! There has been a cancellation for this evening. A honeymoon suite is now available.

M: Great. I'll take it.

W: But I'll have to charge you two hundred fifty dollars for the night.

M: Ah. I should get a discount for the inconvenience.

W: Well. The best I can give you is a ten percent discount plus a ticket for a free breakfast.

M: Hey. Isn't the breakfast free anyway?

W: Well, only on weekends.

M: Okay. That'll be fine.

听力原文:M: Can we make you an offer? We would like to run the campaign for four extra wee
ks.

W: Well, can we summarize the problem from our point of view? First of all, the campaign was late. It missed two important trade fairs. The ads also did not appear into key magazines. As a result, the campaign failed. Do you accept that summary of what happened?

M: Well, the delay wasn't entirely our fault. You did in fact make late changes to the specifications of the advertisements.

W: Hmm, actually, you were late with the initial proposals, so you had very little time. And in fact, we only asked for small changes.

M: Well, whatever. Can we repeat our offer to run the campaign for four extra weeks?

W: That's not really the point. The campaign missed two key trade fairs. Because of this, we're asking you either to repeat the campaign next year for free, or we only pay 50% of the fee for this year.

M; Could we suggest a 20% reduction to the fee together with the four-week sustention to the campaign?

W: We are not happy. We lost business.

M: I think we both made mistakes. The responsibility is on both sides.

W: Ok, let's suggest a new solution. How about a 40% cut in fee, or a free repeat campaign?

M: Well, let's take a break. We're not getting very far. Perhaps we should think about this.

Questions 22 to 25 are based on the conversation you have just heard.

22. What do we learn about the man's company?

23. Why was the campaign delayed according to the man?

24. What did the woman propose as a solution to the problem?

25. What does the man suggest they do at the end of the conversation?

(25)

A.It publishes magazines.

B.It is engaged in product design.

C.It sponsors trade fairs.

D.It runs sales promotion campaigns.

es they print. I can't open a newspaper or magazine without reading stories full of false information about myself or people I know. It's get ting...

M: Sorry, but I can't believe that you're actually complaining about free publicity. I mean I remember, Shelley, before you were famous, you were begging us to write features about you...anything...

W: If you would just let me finish of course the press have been important. I'm an actress and I understand the power of the press. But the thing is, I rarely seem to read anything true about myself these days... The point I'm trying to make here is that famous people have families with feelings.

M: Oh, sorry. You're really hurt by that particular article last week.

W: To increase circulation and make more money, certain newspapers continue to print those stories when it's obvious that they're not true.

M: But I think we have to consider the relationship between fame, the public and the press. The public are fascinated by fame and scandal, and they love to read about their favorite stars.

W: I'm sick of gutter-press making up stories. It's irresponsible and it messes up people's life.

M: The problem is, it's not always clear what's true and what isn't. I mean, if a newspaper prints something scandalous or embarrassing about a famous person, they're bound to deny it, but that doesn't mean it's not true.

W: Are you trying to say...

M: No smoke without fire, if you ask me.

(20)

B.A well-known actress and a newspaper editor.

C.A movie star and one of her fans.

D.A movie star and a TV interviewer.

听力原文:W: Oh, Larry, I have been meaning to talk to you.

M: Hi, Jenis. What's up?

W: I have this great job lined up to manage the clothing store at the mall.

M: So what's the problem?

W: Well, one of the professors in my department just told me about a summer internship program that's available. She thinks I might be able to intern in the office of the Way fare Hotel here in town.

M: That sounds like a great opportunity too. Why not take advantage of it?

W: I'd love to, especially since I'm studying hotel management. It would be a great way to get some practical experience in my field.

M: And you never know, it might lead to something with them after graduation. They are on of the biggest hotel chains in the area.

W: You're right. But the drawback is I wouldn't be making nearly as much money as I would be working in the clothing store, not to mention the discount I could get on clothes there.

M: How much is the internship paid?

W: They pay their internship a small stipend and give them free room and board for the sum- mer.

M: Well, if I were you, I would take the internship anyway. You could always get a job during the school year to make a few extra bucks.

Why does Jenise want to talk to Larry?

A.To ask for help finding a job.

B.To find out what he's doing during the summer.

C.To ask him to give her some advice.

D.To invite him to go shopping with her later.

听力原文:W: Do you think you can give an exact definition of "management", Mr. Rogers?

M: [19] Management is the process of achieving results through other people.

W: What are the functions of management?

M: There are mainly four. The first is planning. Managers define goals, establish strategy and develop plans to co-ordinate activities.

W: That's not easy, I think.

M: No. And the second is organizing, which means managers will determine what tasks to be done, who is to do them, how the tasks are to be grouped, who reports to whom, etc.

W: That's complicated.

M: And the third is leading. It includes motivating subordinates, directing others, selecting the most effective communication channels and resolving conflicts.

W: Do you think the goal of good management is to get rid of conflicts?

M: Actually, we've made considerable progress towards overcoming the view that conflict is bad.

W: [20] So you mean conflicts can be good for an organization?

M: [20] Yes. Conflicts can be used to bring about substantial changes to the existing power structure, current patterns of interaction between people at work, and attitude.

W: That surprises me.

M: The last function controlling means to monitor activities to ensure they are being accomplished as planned, and correct significant deviations.

W: It is said that all managers need to realize that the more they delegate now, the less time it will take to accomplish tasks later. Is that true?

M: Right. [21] Without delegation, managers run the risk of being a "doer" rather than a "manager'.

W: Can I understand this as "delegation is a ticket to ride free and have others to do your work"?

M: Not exactly. It is rather a means for managers to focus on their true functions.

(20)

A.It is getting things done through other people.

B.It is helping an organization find the right staff.

C.It is assembling people of different abilities.

D.It is communicating between colleagues.

M: Uh, what's sort?

W: Well, first of all, we need one complete new drawing board.

M: A DO44 or DO45?

W: Uh, I don't know. What's the difference?

M: Well, the 45 costs 15 pounds more.

W: Hmm, so what's the total price then?

M: It's 387 pounds.

W: Does that include value added tax?

M: Oh, I'm not sure, most of the prices do. Yes, I think it does.

W: Hmm, what are the boards actually made of?

M: Oh, I don't know. I think it's a sort of plastic stuff these days. It's white anyway.

W: Hmm, and how long does it take to deliver?

M: Oh, I couldn't really say. It depends on how much work we've got and how many other orders there are to send out, you know.

W: Ok. Now we also want some drawing pens, ink and rulers and some drawing paper.

M: Oh, dear, the girl that takes orders for supplies isn't here this morning, so I can't take those orders for you. I only do the equipment, you see.

W: OK. Well, perhaps I'll ring back tomorrow.

M: So do you want the drawing board then?

W: I'll have to think about it. Thanks very much. I'll let you know. Goodbye.

M: Thank you. Goodbye.

A.It is not his responsibility.

B.It will be free for large orders.

C.It costs 15 more for express delivery.

D.It depends on a number of factors.

Passage One You've probably had the experience of having someone fall in love with you w

Passage One

You've probably had the experience of having someone fall in love with you when you didn't feel the same way. In such a case it's hard to know what to do. You don't want to be so obvious in your efforts that you make an enemy of him.

A friend of mine had this problem and handled it in the most tactful (得体的) way I've ever seen. Instead of telling her admirer directly, she devoted herself to introducing him to every girl she knew. Whenever she had a date with him, she arranged to drop in at the home of one of her girl friends. At last he clicked (一见如故) with one of these girls, and then everyone was happy. My friend was rid of a problem and she still had the young man as a friend, which was just what she wanted him to be.

Of course this solution may not work for you. You may have your own way of dealing with the problem. But whatever you decide to do, keep one thing in mind—the boy in question has feelings every bit as sensitive as your own. So try to find a way of discouraging him without hurting him.
