A Good Lesson

After living in Europe for seven years, my parents decided that my family would move to the United States. We all looked forward to this. What would people think of us? For me, I hoped to be the hero of the class.

I was not disappointed. All my classmates admired my experience, and I quickly became well known as “the French guy.”I was very popular for a time. However, I was not interested in many things my classmates did,and it was hard for me to connect with them. I enjoyed listening to classical music, never watched TV, and almost never watched movies.

I did not have a common background with my friends because I grew up in Europe. I had few friends, and fewer good friends. When I look back now, I realize I was a bit of an idiot to many people around me. I kept talking proudly about my experience. And I thought myself better than those around me because I lived in Europe but they didn’t.

I had decided I wanted better friends when my parents said that we were going to move again! I saw this as a perfect chance to get better friends, where people did not know of my unkind past.

When we moved to California, I did not show off as I had done for five years. I did not tell everyone that I lived in Europe. I still listened to classical music, but I just kept my music to myself. Sure enough, I found that people like someone who is not typical but does not boast about it.

Nothing can replace good friends, and if I had to control my tender and pride, it was well worth it.

My name is Sarah. My friendship with Kathy was real friendship but it was not perfect.
There were two things I have to tell you about. Either one of them is enough to explain what was wrong between us. Both of them together brought our friendship to an end. But to this day, thirty years later, I still cannot decide which of these two things really caused me to betray her…

I learnt very soon in our relationship that Kathy was jealous. She did not like to think that I had anything that she did not have. We would have great fun going out shopping. However, if I bought, say, a dress for a party, and she thought my dress was better than hers, she would start to say slightly unkind things about it. I could not understand this at all, and even now it puzzles me.

The other problem was my mother. She thought Kathy was common. She thought Kathy had a bad influence over me. She even disliked Kathy’s way of speaking. She thought her pronunciation was common. Mum disliked Katy and looked down on her and kept telling me to stop seeing her. If ever I invited her into the house, she would be angry and tell me off as soon as Kathy was gone.

1、What is the best title for this passage?()

A.Friendship

B.Problems with our friendship

C.My friendship with Kathy

D.My good friend

B.Sarah liked her, but didn’t like it when she was jealous.

A.She thought Kathy was common.

B.She knew Kathy was jealous of her daughter.

C.She thought Kathy was a bad influence on her daughter.

4、Why was their friendship not perfect?()

A.Kathy was jealous.

B.Sarah’s mother didn’t like Kathy.

C.Sarah was too proud.

5、Which of the following statements is not true?()

Xiaoyan,

I thought you'd like to know what has happened to your report about improving the website.

Last week I had a meeting with the designers. I gave them a copy of your report and I told them that we needed to have the website redesigned.

-- I've had the first page simplified.

-- I have asked them to make the icons large.

-- The colours are now different too.

-- There are more functions, as you suggested, so that customers will be able to transfer funds to an account in another bank.

I’m going to make a presentation about these changes at the Paris, conference and would like to talk to you about that. There are some things I can do myself, but I would like your help with some technical aspects. I must get some slides made too, and would like your opinion about them.

Have you got time for a coffee on either Wednesday or Thursday morning?

第10题

Good sense is the most equitably distributed thing in the world, for each man considers hi
mself so well provided with it that even those who are most difficult to satisfy in everything else do not usually wish to have more of it than they have already. It is not likely that everyone is, mistaken in this; it shows, rather, that the ability to judge rightly and separate the true from the false, which is essentially what is called good sense or reason, is by nature equal in all men, and thus that our opinions differ not because some men are better endowed with reason than others, but only because we direct our thoughts along different paths, and do not consider the same things, for it is not enough to have a good mind: what is most important is to apply it rightly. The greatest souls are capable of the greatest vices; and those who walk very slowly can advance much further, if they always keep to the direct road, than those who run and go astray.

For my part, I have never presumed my mind to be more perfect than average in any way; I have, in fact, often wished that my thoughts were as quick, or my imagination as precise and distinct, or my memory as capacious or prompt, as those of some other men.

And I know of no other qualities than these which make for the perfection of the mind; for as to reason, or good sense, inasmuch as it alone makes us men and distinguishes us from the beasts, I am quite willing to believe that it is whole and entire in each of us, and to follow in the common opinion of the philosophers who say that there are differences of more or less only among the accidents, and not among the forms, or natures, of the individuals of a single species.

According to the author, the three elements that comprise the perfect mind are ______.

A.tenacity of thought, capacious memory, quickness of mind

B.precise imagination, tenacity of memory, quickness of thought

C.quickness of wit, ease of conscience, quickness of thought

D.promptness of memory, distinctness of imagination, quickness of thought
