The Human Tissue Authority’s position on the retention of body parts for medical research after a post-mortem examination is equally flawed. The new consent forms could have been drafted by some evil person seeking to stop the precious flow of human tissue into the pathological laboratory. The forms are so lengthy that doctors rarely have time to complete them and, even if they try, the wording is so graphic that relatives tend to leg it before signing. In consequence, the number of post mortems has fallen quickly.
The wider worry is that the moral shortsightedness evident in the Human Tissue Act seems to infect every facet of the contemporary debate on medical ethics. Take the timid approach to embryonic stem cell research. The United States, for example, refuses government funding to scientists who wish to carry out potentially ground-breaking research on the surplus embryos created by IVF treatment.
Senators profess to be worried that embryonic research fails to respect the dignity of “potential persons”. Rarely can such a vacuous concept have found its way into a debate claming to provide enlightenment. When is this “potential” supposed to kick in? In case you were wondering, these supposedly precious embryos are at the same stage of development as those that are routinely terminated by the Pill without anyone crying. Thankfully, the British Government has refused the position of the United States and operates one of the most liberal regimes in Europe, in which licences have been awarded to researchers to create embryos for medical research. It is possible that, in years to come, scientists will be able to grow organs in the lab and find cures for a range of debilitating diseases.
The fundamental problem with our approach to ethics is our inability to separate emotion from policy. The only factor that should enter our moral and legal deliberations is that of welfare, a concept that is meaningless when applied to entities that lack self-consciousness. Never forget that the research that we are so reluctant to conduct upon embryos and dead bodies is routinely carried out on living, pain-sensitive animals.

The founder of quantum mechanics (量子力学) and the inventor of the uncertainty principle, Werner Heisenberg was born in Wurzburg and brought up in Munich, where he entered the university in 1920 to study physics under Arnold Sommerfeld. After a brief stay at Gottingen University, he moved to Copenhagen to pursue research under Niels Boho and remained there until 1927.
After 1913 the quantum theory made considerable progress, but by 1924 it was running out of steam, largely owing to its lack of a coherent and systematic mathematical foundation. In the summer of 1925 Heisenberg discovered the foundation of just such a mechanics. Then his theory was rapidly developed by Max Born, Pascual Jordan, and P. A.M. Dirac.
In the spring of 1927, while a lecture at Boho's institute, Heisenberg followed up his discovery of the uncertainty relations, which are of central importance in quantum mechanics.
Heisenberg was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1932 for his contribution t9 the development of quantum mechanics. From 1927 to 1941 he was professor of theoretical physics at the University of Leipzig. Although privately unsympathetic to the Nazi regime he remained in Germany throughout the Second World Wax, seeing it as his duty to work for the preservation of German physics and its future reconstruction. From 1941 to 1945 he was Director of the Kiser Wihelm Institute for Physics at Berlin, where he worked with Otto Hahn on the development of a nuclear reactor. After the war he became Director of the Max Planck Institute for Physics and played a prominent part in the promotion of scientific research in Germany.
Heisenberg has an important part in 20th century thought: the notion of uncertainty which he introduced is, like Einstein's concept of relativity, one of the major idea of the century; it has changed not only physics but our entire world picture.
When was the firm foundation of quantum theory laid?
A.In 1913.
B.In 1924.
C.In 1925.
D.In 1927.

Virtually everyone gets bored once in a while. Most of us chalk it up to a dull environment. “The most common way to define boredom in Western culture is‘having nothing to do. ’”says psychologist Stephen Vodanovich of the University of West Florida. And indeed, early research into the effects of boredom focused on people forced to perform. dull tasks, such as working a factory assembly line.
But boredom is not merely an natural property of the circumstances, researchers say. Rather this perception is subjective and rooted in aspects of consciousness. Levels of boredom vary among people:some individuals are far less liable to boredom than others-and some, such as extroverts(性格外向者),are more likely to have this feeling.
Thus,a new generation of scientists is coping with the psychological interpretations of this most tedious of human emotions-and they have found that it is more complicated than is commonly known. Researchers say that boredom is not a unified concept but rather comes in several flavors. Level of attention,an aspect of conscious awareness, plays an important role in boredom, such that improving a person's ability to focus may therefore decrease boredom. Emotional factors can also contribute to boredom. People who are poor in understanding their own feelings and those who become sucked in and distracted by their moods are more easily bored, for example.
Staying away from tedium is not easy. People who are liable to boredom are more likely to suffer from ills such as depression and drug addiction;they also tend to be socially awkward and poor performers at school or work.
The purpose of the first paragraph is to______.
A.illustrate why people are less able to focus
B.show how boring a lecture in a dark room is
C.tell people how fatigue affects concentration
D.describe a situation where people can get bored

The great majority of all earthquakes occur in two specific geographic areas. One such area covers the Pacific Ocean and its bordering landmasses. The other extends from the East Indians to the Atlas Mountains, including the Himalayas, Iran, Turkey, and the Alpine regions. It is in these two great belts or zones that ninety percent of all earthquakes take place; they may, however, happen anywhere at any time.
This element of the unknown has for centuries added greatly to the dread and horror surrounding earthquakes, but in recent times there have been indications that earthquake forecast may be possible. By analyzing changes in animal behavior, patterns of movements in the earth‟s shell, variations in the earth‟s force of attraction, and the frequency with which minor earth shakes are observed, scientists have shown increasing success in expecting when and where earthquakes will strike. As a result, a worldwide earthquake warning network is already in operation and has helped to prepare for (and thus lessen) the vast destruction that might otherwise have been totally unexpected.
It is doubtful that man will ever be able to control earthquakes and get rid of their destructiveness altogether, but as how and why earthquakes happen become better
understood, man will become more and more able to deal with their possible damage before they occur.
1.Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?
A. Earthquake destruction is declining
B. Earthquake forecast is improving
C. Man is no longer fearful of earthquakes.
D. Man is capable of conquering earthquakes
2.We can infer from the passage that quakes __________.
A. may happen anywhere at any time
B. mostly strike in oceans and mountains

A. reduce the loss from earthquake disasters
B. lower the frequency of earthquakes
