2 Helen Bradshaw, a recent graduate with a degree in catering management, has spotted a ma
rket opportunity during

her first job with a large supermarket chain. She knows there is a growing market for distinctive, quality cakes in the

bakery sections of the supermarket chains, as well as in supplying independent individual premium cake shops, and

also for catering wholesalers supplying restaurants and hotels.

Helen is very determined to set up her own business under the brand name of ‘Helen’s cakes’, and has bought some

equipment – industrial food mixers, ovens, cake moulds – and also rented a small industrial unit to make the cakes.

Helen has created three sets of recipes – one for the premium cake shop market, one for the supermarkets and one

for the catering wholesalers but is uncertain which market to enter first. Each channel of distribution offers a different

set of challenges. The premium cake shop market consists of a large number of independent cake shops spread

through the region, each looking for daily deliveries, a wide product range and low volumes. The supermarkets are

demanding good quality, competitive prices and early development of a product range under their own brand name.

The catering wholesalers require large volumes, medium quality and low prices.

Helen has learnt that you are a consultant specialising in start-up enterprises and is looking to you for advice.

Required:

(a) Acting as a consultant, prepare a short report for Helen advising her on the advantages and disadvantages

each channel offers and the implications for a successful start-up. (12 marks)

As the name implies, CTI(Computer-Telephone-Integration) is the fusing of telephone operations with those performed by a computer. CTI has actually been around for a good two decades. Until recently, it required users to(36)a good deal of knowledge about telephone interconnect processes as well as networking and database programming to(37)even the most rudimentary tasks. These two skill sets are rarely possessed by the same individual. But today CTI has gone client/server. Microsoft corp. has included its client-side Telephony API(TAPI) with every copy of Windows 95. The company's service-side TAPI is now available for Windows NT. There are many telephony(38)that turn the interconnect portion of a CTI(39)into standard data programming, and low-cost, easy -to- create telephony is born. Better yet, many of these(38)are Visual Basic add-ons. CTI is also subject to all the cost benefits of cheaper, PC-based hardware. The two portions of CTI are(40)

s the Abstract of a research article?____________

A.A number of studies have demonstrated that there can be important cross-cultural differences in the speech-act performance between two different speech communities, especially in relation to the level of directness of their request realization.Such distinct cross-cultural differences have been found to exist between the Greek and the English interactional styles as well as between the Greek and the English verbal telephone behavior.

B.A total of 200 opening requests were randomly collected from the telephone service encounters produced by callers at the call center of a UK airline: 100 opening requests produced in Greek by GNSs and 100 opening requests produced in English by ENSs.Semi-structured interviews were also carried out in relation to the telephone operators who received the calls. These interviews were conducted in order to gain some qualitative insights into how the callers’ requests and telephone behavior. were perceived by the hearers (operators).Using the analytical framework of face-saving theory, each of the opening requests of the telephone observation data was coded and classified. The results were statistically tested in order to establish whether the differences found were statically significant.

C.This article examines whether there are marked cross-cultural differences in the level of directness of request realization between Greek and British speakers when ringing an airline’s call center.Using the analytical framework of face-saving theory, 200 opening requests were analyzed and statistically tested.Qualitative insights were gained from semi-structured interviews.Significant differences were found in the degree of requestive directness employed by Greek and British speakers in telephone business encounters, with the Greek employing a higher degree of directness.Further research is needed to establish whether such differences exist in socially different contexts and in different role relationships.

D.The present empirical study found significant differences in the degree of requestive directness employed by GNSs and ENSs when ringing an airline’s call center. The GNSs were found to employ a higher degree of directness as far as their opening telephone requests were concerned and this finding can be seen as being consistent with the ethos of directness, spontaneity and positive politeness orientation found to characterize the Greek language and culture. It additionally suggests that there is a need for the Greek callers to formulate their requests in the most explicit and shortest way possible in the business context examined particularly because directness seems to be motivated not only by spontaneity but also by their need for efficiency, urgency and pragmatic clarity. As the requests elicited from this data were exclusively elicited from an airline’s call center, they are context-specific.Further research is therefore needed in order to establish whether such significant differences are present in socially different contexts as well as in different role relationships.

School children will have a more difficult time skipping classes in the future if a softwa
re program that lets parents monitor their children catches on.

A start-up company called School-Soft, based in Cupertino, Calif., unveiled an upgrade to its software that lets parents monitor their child's performance in school over the Internet.

The company has developed software that runs on Corp.'s popular Palm-Pilot handheld computers. School-Soft resells the Palm-Pilot to schools, pre-loaded with School Soft software, plus programs to run on a school's network server. School teachers can then enter into the Palm-Pilot student attendance data, grades, homework assignments, activities and the like, which is sent to the school's central server. Later, parents with either Internet access or just a telephone can access the school's server for updates from the teacher. Before the software upgrade, parents could only access the system via the telephone.

Jim Weldon, School-Soft founder and chief executive, said the company at present has an installed base of about 330 schools around the United States, and that the software was used for children in kindergarten all the way up to secondary school. "In high school, parents really want to track activities, grades, etc.—how do they get on track to go to college?" said Weldon. "Children also have access as well to their academic records...Sometimes you don't know where you are."

When asked if many children have objected to their parents using the software, Weldon said that most are aware of the advantages the software can provide, such as letting them know about grades and performance issues in school—long before report cards arrive.

The old copy of the software______.

A.is internet based

B.is telephone based

C.is well accepted

D.is well programmed
