Section B

Directions: In this section, you will hear 3 short passages. At the end of each passage, you will hear some questions. Both the passage and the questions will be spoken only once. After you hear a question, you must choose the best answer from the four choices marked A, B, C and D.

听力原文: [26] Americans who remember "the good old days" are not alone in complaining about the educational System in this country. Immigrants complain, too. Lately a German friend was filled with anger when he learned that the first mathematics test given to his son as a college freshman included multiplication and division. Japanese businessmen in Los Angeles send their children to private schools staffed by teachers imported from Japan who teach mathematics at more advanced level.

[27] But I wonder: If American education is so poor, why is it that this is still the country of innovation? When I was 12 in Indonesia, I had to memorize the name of all the world's major cities. At the same age, my son, who was brought up a Californian, thought that Buenos Aires was Spanish for good food. However, unlike children of his age in Asia and Europe, my son had studied creative geography. When he was only 6, he drew a map of the route that he traveled to get to school, including the streets, the traffic signs and the houses that he passed. Dissatisfied American parents forget that in this country their children are able to experiment freely with ideas; without this they will not be able to think or to believe in themselves. Critics of American education cannot grasp one thing: freedom. [28] America, I think, is the only country that extends even to children the license to freely speak, write and be creative. Our public education is not perfect, but it is better than any other.

(27)

A.The Japanese mathematic teachers.

B.Both the speaker and his German friend.

C.Both Americans and immigrants.

D.The son of the speaker's German friend.

1+Many a young person tells me he wants to be a writer. I always encourage such people, but I also explain that there’s a big difference between a writer and writing. In most cases these individuals are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hours at a typewriter. “You have got to want to write,” I said to them, “not want to be a writer.”

The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poor-paying affair. For every writer kissed by fortune there are thousands more whose longing is never rewarded. When I left a 20-year career in the U.S. Coast Guard to become a freelance writer, I had no prospects at all. What I did have was a friend who found for me my room in a New York apartment building. It didn’t even matter that it was cold and had no bathroom. I immediately bought a used typewriter and felt like a genuine writer.

After a year or so, however, I still hadn’t got a break and began to doubt myself. It was so hard to sell a story that barely made enough to eat. But I knew I wanted to write. I had dreamed about it for many years. I wasn’t going to be one of those people who died wondering. What if? I would keep putting my dream to test (even though it meant living with uncertainty and fear of failure). This is the shadow-land of hope, and anyone with a dream must learn to live there.

21、The passage is meant to _______ .

A.warn young people of the hardship that a successful writer has to experience

B.advise young people to give up their idea of becoming a professional writer

C.show young people it is unrealistic for a writer to pursue wealth

D.encourage young people to pursue a writing career

24、In “…people who died wondering”, “who” refers to those _______ .

A.who think too much of the dark side of life

B.who regret giving up their career halfway

C.who think a lot without making a decision

D.who are full of imagination even upon death

25、“Shadow-land” in the last sentence refers to _______ .

A.the wonderland one often dreams about

B.the bright future that one is looking forward to

C.the state of uncertainty before one’s final goal is reached

D.a world that exists only in one’s imagination

(课外资料)

I am very happy to share my story about breast enlargement in Thailand. Anyone who is not sure about breast enlargement should read this story first.

Firstly, I was amazed at the level of care I received at the Thailand private hospital. It was like being in a luxury hotel. The nursing staffs were also better than those who I have ever met in all my years in America. Not only were they professional, but kinder and more patient than Western nurses.

The hospital food was excellent, so I was able to choose from a large and varied Menu. In my private room, there was cable T. V., a fridge, a phone, and impressive views of Bangkok(曼谷). My Translator was able to communicate with me, and the plastic surgeons arranged the whole operation without me lifting a finger.

The operation cost me a third of the price of the U. K. With the low cost of the air tickets and a holiday, it worked out at about half UK's price, because the cost in Thailand is so cheap.

Combining a plastic surgery with a holiday in an amazing place is an unforgettable experience. From the moment I arrived in Bangkok airport, I felt relaxed and welcomed by the Plastic Surgery & Holiday team, it made me feel that I had friends here already.

A. In Thailand.

B. In America.

C. In U. K.

2. Was the author satisfied with the nursing staffs for her?{A; B; C}

A. No, because they were no better than America nurses.

B. Yes, because they were more patient than Western nurses.

C. No, because the care was very poor.

A. The author was content with the food in the hospital.

B. When the author was in the hospital, she lived in a public room.

C. There was cable T. V., a bridge and a phone in the author’s room.

4. What does the underlined phrase lifting a finger mean in paragraph three?{A; B; C}

A. Doing something with only one finger.

B. Helping with something.

C. Carrying something.

5. Why did the author think her experience unforgettable?{A; B; C}

A. Because she had an operation there.

B. Because she was satisfied with everything there.

C. Because she was satisfied with the service and price there.

In the late 1920s my mother ran away from home to marry my father.Marriage,if not run
ning away,was expected of 17-year-old girls.By the time she was 20,she had 2 children and was pregnant with a third.5 children later,I was born.And this is how I came to know my mother:she seemed a large,soft,loving-eyed woman who was rarely impatient in our home.Her quick,violent temper was on view only a few times a year,when she battled with the white landlord who had the misfortune to suggest to her that her children did not need to go to school.She made all the clothes we wore,even my brothers' overalls.She made all the towels and sheets we used. She spent the summers canning vegetables and fruits.She spent the winter evenings making quilts enough to cover all our beds.During the "working" day,she labored beside-not behind-my father in the fields.Her day began before sunup,and did not end until late at night.There was never a moment for her to sit down,undisturbed,to unravel her own private thoughts;never a time free from interruption-by work or the noisy inquiries of her many children.And yet,it is to my mother-and all our mothers who were not famous-that I went in search of the secret of what has fed that muzzled and often mutilated,but vibrant,creative spirit that the black woman has inherited,and that pops out in wild and unlikly places to this day.

It seems to the narrator that it would be really good if ()

A、the mother worked from sunup till night

B、the mother worked side by side with her husband

C、the mother made all things that the family needed

D、the mother could have some time to think undisturbed
