Carl Sandburg and a lot of others have tried to make something out of Lincoln that he wasn't. He was a decent man, a good politician, and a great President, and they've tried to build up things that he never even thought about. I'll bet a dollar and a half that if you read Sandburg's biography of Lincoln, you'll find things put into Lincoln's mouth and mind that never even occurred to him. He was a good man who was in the place where he ought to have been at the time important events were taking place, but when they write about him as though he belongs in the pantheon (从神庙) of the gods, that's not the man he really was. He was the best kind of ordinary man, and when I say that he was an ordinary man, I mean that as high praise, not deprecation. That's the highest praise you can give a man. He's one of the people and becomes distinguished in the service that he gives other people. He was one of the people, and he wanted to stay that way. And he was that way until the day he died. One of the reasons he was assassinated was because he didn't feel important enough to have the proper guards around him at Ford's Theatre.
According to the passage, Lincoln was ______ .
A.a man belonging in the pantheon of the gods
B.defied (藐视) by all the people
C.as ordinary as all the other people
D.a responsible person

Praise and encouragement also makes employees more likely to work hard and stay in their jobs. In this way the business companies can save the cost of finding new employees. A third of 1,000 workers surveyed by a consulting firm said they did not get thanked at all when they did well-and a further third said they were not thanked enough. In both cases. staff said they felt undervalued, meaning they were less likely to exert themselves and were more likely to look for employment elsewhere.
The result of the survey shows that there would be around £5.2 billion loss in productivity if the employees felt less appreciated. According to the firm, praising staff has the same positive effect as a 1 per cent pay rise-and works out much cheaper for bosses. Three out of four employees said that regular acknowledgement by their bosses was important to them, but only a quarter said they were actually given as much praise as they felt they needed.
The survey found that those in blue-collar and manual jobs were less likely to be given any recognition for doing well. But it seems that they most need such praise.
In regional terms,Scottish staff felt most undervalued. Four out of ten workers said they were never thanked and eight out of ten said they would like more praise. However. workers in the North-East are less impressed by being praised by the boss,as only 69 per cent said they felt the need to be told“well done”regularly. Older employees and women need the most reassurance, according to psychologist Averil Leimon. She said that words of praise did more than creating a pleasant place to work-they could even promote profits.
The survey indicates that politeness could save businesses a huge amount of money every year because______.
A.politeness makes employees expect pay rise
B.politeness is less likely to make staff work harder
C.politeness helps employers find proper employees
D.politeness helps employers reduce the cost of staff employment

As a business grows, the managers become more involved in the day-to-day running of the business and sometimes the longer-term perspective is ignored. The directors are responsible for considering the long-term objectives of the business and for ensuring that resources are organized carefully so that long-term objectives are achieved. Directors are also responsible for reporting to shareholders in company reports, and it is the directors, not the managers, who bear the brunt of shareholders' scorn when profits are down, as well as receiving shareholders' praise when profits are up. Ironically, although directors are not known as managers, their whole job is about management!

Dancing Beijing
Every emblem of the Olympics tells a beautiful story. When the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games emblem “Chinese Seal, Dancing Beijing” was first presented to the International Olympic Committee, the IOC officials all gave it high praise, saying it was the best emblem ever designed.
The emblem is filled with Beijing’s hospitality and hopes, and carries the commitment made to the Olympic Movement by a country that has a population of 1.3 billion and by a nation with both ancient civilization and modern culture.
“Dancing Beijing” is a symbol of trust and an expression of self-confidence, standing for the promise that Beijing — the host city of the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympic Games — has made to the world and to all mankind.
