In 1924 America's National Research Council sent two engineers to supervise a series of ex

Instead, the studies ended 【B2】 giving their name to the " Hawthorne effect, " the extremely influential idea that the very 【B3】 of being experimented upon changed subjects' behavior.

The idea arose because of the 【B4】 behavior. of the women in the plant. According to 【B5】 of the experiments, their hourly output rose when lighting was increased, but also when it was dimmed. It did not 【B6】 what was done in the experiment; 【B7】 something was changed, productivity rose. A(n) 【B8】 that they were being experimented upon seemed to be 【B9】 to alter workers' behavior. 【B10】 itself.

After several decades, the same data were 【B11】 to econometric analysis. The Hawthorne experiments had another surprise in store. 【B12】 the descriptions on record, no systematic 【B13】 was found that levels of productivity were related to changes in lighting.

It turns out that the peculiar way of conducting the experiments may have led to 【B14】 interpretations of what happened. 【B15】 , lighting was always changed on a Sunday. When work started again on Monday, output 【B16】 rose compared with the previous Saturday and 【B17】 to rise for the next couple of days. 【B18】, a comparison with data for weeks when there was no experimentation showed that output always went up on Mondays. Workers 【B19】 to be diligent for the first few days of the week in any case, before 【B20】 a plateau and then slackening off. This suggests that the alleged "Hawthorne effect" is hard to pin down.

Blocks of "high-rise" flats have been built in large numbers in London and in many other b
ig cities. Just after the Second World War these big, twenty-to-thirty storey buildings, hundreds of feet in height, were thought to be the ideal solution to the housing problem. For on the one hand, there was severe housing shortage, but on the other hand, there was lack of space to build houses in urban areas. Blocks of "high-rise" flats seemed at first to be able to solve the problem, since they can offer more families to live in on less land. The beautiful, modem apartments in the high-rises were much sought after by people who lived downtown.

Hundreds of the vast blocks had been built before anyone began to doubt about whether they were good solutions or not. Are they suitable places for people, children especially, to live in? A well-known British architect, who personally designed many of these buildings, now believes that the high-rises may well make those people who have been housed in them suffer a great deal.

Evidence has been collected by social workers, which suggests that people do suffer. They complain about severe loneliness and deep depression living within these great towers. People also talk about lack of communication with others, no easy access to a playground for children, no chances for adults to get familiarized with each other. Many people say that they have lived next door to each other for years in the same building, but they never know who their neighbors are. Some experts say that a large number of people living in the high-rises suffer from mental disorder and even developed criminal tendencies. As a result of these new discoveries, plans for new high-rise blocks are being reconsidered. We Chinese are now building up many high-rises in big cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. Perhaps we should also reconsider the idea too.

There was a big housing problem after the Second World War ______.

A.in London

B.in the rural areas

C.in many big cities

D.in many countries

材料:

Early on 5 November 1996,the 140,086 tonnes deadweight Malaysian flag bulk carrier Giga 2 was nearing completion of discharge of a cargo of iron ore at No.2 discharge berth,Port KemblA、Due to the vessel&39;s light condition, the unloader could not be positioned over No.1 hold,to remove the 1080 tonnes of cargo remaining in that particular hold.At the suggestion of the shift supervisor, ballast was pumped into No.4 hold, which was permissible under the vessel&39;s operations manual.Pumping of ballast into No.4 hold commenced at 0530.

After the lunch break, two terminal workers descended into No.5 hold, where the unloader was working,to clear iron ore from around the bottom of the forward spiral access ladder. The spiral ladder terminated at the top of the lower stool, six metres above the tank top. They had just completed this task and were about to climb the ladder when the bulkhead to the starboard side of the centre line, between No.5 hold and the ballasted No.4 hold, collapsed. Both workers were immediately engulfed by the deluge and, although one was able to haul himself clear, the other remained submerged.

The shift supervisor was working in his office ashore and, alerted by calls over the radio from the Hatchman, dashed on board and immediately descended the ladder into No.5 hold.Up to his neck in the swirling water and guided by the Hatchman above,he was able to grab hold of the submerged worker.Assisted by another terminal worker, who had followed him into the hold,he was able to haul the unconscious and apparently lifeless worker clear of the water. The shift supervisor then administered cardio-pulmonary resuscitation(CPR),which was successful in restoring breathing in the worker.Very shortly afterwards an ambulance officer arrived on the scene and administered oxygen, before the worker was lifted from the hold and taken to hospital.
