They'll never pick me, you thought. Three teenage kids torched a subway token boo
th after seeing the movie Money Train on cable television. They were caught at the scene red-handed, so they aren't claiming innocence. Instead, their defense is that the media are the real culprits; Money Train and television made them do it.

You listen as the prosecutor tells you and your eleven colleagues that similar appeals have been rejected in the past. A boy in Florida named Ronnie Zamora killed an elderly neighbor and said he was just imitating Kojak. Some boys gang raped two little girls after seeing a similar attack on an NBC made-for-television movie, Born Innocent. Both times juries like yours refused to place the blame on the media) Millions of people had seen the same content, those juries reasoned, and they didn't kill anyone, rape anybody, or set fire to anything.

Then you listen to the defense. These are good kids. They've never been in trouble. But they'd seen thieves in the movie squirt a flammable liquid into a token booth and set it afire, causing the clerk to open the door to escape. The defendants did what the movie had taught them to do, only this time the clerk didn't get out in time. She was burned to death. The lawyer asks,

Where would these children have gotten such an idea? Their parents didn't teach them this. Why did they think it was possible? Why did they think no one would get hurt? The attorney then quotes former Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole’s comments on the floor of the U.S. Senate after a series of similar attacks occurred when the movie was in the theaters. Those who work in Hollywood’s corporate suites must also be willing to accept their share of the blame, said the Republican who would eventually run for president. Is this how they want to make their livelihoods? Is this their contribution to society?

(4)What’s Bob Dole’s attitude toward Hollywood’s corporate suites?

B、They contributed a lot to the society.

C、They make their livelihoods in a right way.

D、They should be blamed.

(5)Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the defense?

A、The author believes that the media should not be blamed.

B、These are good kids and they’ve never been in trouble

C、The kids did what the movie had taught them to do

Text 4

All but the tiniest of roads have to have names so they can be recognized on a map, and so people can ask directions to them. Americans name a lot of bridges, too.

Very often these names carry a clear geographical reference the Pennsylvania Turnpike, for example. Or,like the George Washington Bridge, roads and bridges are named for famous historical figures or powerful officers. We make a big deal out of naming things, as when someone decided to name an airport after a U. S. judge.

So now we have the Baltimore Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport. Many,if not most, of our college buildings are named for wealthy people who gave a lot of money to the schools. And our sports centers took this idea a step further. Companies paid a whole lot of money for what′s called the "naming rights" to U. S. Cellular Field in Chicago, for example, and Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.

Now the governor(州长) of Virginia, Bob McDonnell, wants to sell naming rights to roads and bridges in the state. He says not just companies, but also wealthy people, would help the Virginia transportation budget(预算) by paying to have their names--or perhaps those of loved ones--placed on roads and bridges, and thus on maps as well. People hold different views, however. Supporters say Americans are used to having things sponsored(赞助). Others disagree, considering the idea as the next step in the "companies of America. " They wonder how far such an idea might spread, and where it would end:at the Burger King Pacific Ocean, perhaps.

Most of the roads need to have names so that____.

A.they can remind people of the past

B.people can learn about them better

C.they can be easily recognized on mapss

D.people can enjoy naming them

D.Wealthy peopl

What can we learn from the last paragraph?A.People have different ideas toward naming things.

B.Americans have sponsored naming a lot.

C.Everything is named by an American company.

D.Pacific Ocean will be rename

Why does the governor of Virginia want to sell naming rights?A.To remember the loved names.

B.To make the state well-known.

C.To help the transportation budget.

D.To increase companies' sales.

4 You are a senior manager in Becker & Co, a firm of Chartered Certified Accountants o
ffering audit and assurance

services mainly to large, privately owned companies. The firm has suffered from increased competition, due to two

new firms of accountants setting up in the same town. Several audit clients have moved to the new firms, leading to

loss of revenue, and an over staffed audit department. Bob McEnroe, one of the partners of Becker & Co, has asked

you to consider how the firm could react to this situation. Several possibilities have been raised for your consideration:

1. Murray Co, a manufacturer of electronic equipment, is one of Becker & Co’s audit clients. You are aware that the

company has recently designed a new product, which market research indicates is likely to be very successful.

The development of the product has been a huge drain on cash resources. The managing director of Murray Co

has written to the audit engagement partner to see if Becker & Co would be interested in making an investment

in the new product. It has been suggested that Becker & Co could provide finance for the completion of the

development and the marketing of the product. The finance would be in the form. of convertible debentures.

Alternatively, a joint venture company in which control is shared between Murray Co and Becker & Co could be

established to manufacture, market and distribute the new product.

2. Becker & Co is considering expanding the provision of non-audit services. Ingrid Sharapova, a senior manager in

Becker & Co, has suggested that the firm could offer a recruitment advisory service to clients, specialising in the

recruitment of finance professionals. Becker & Co would charge a fee for this service based on the salary of the

employee recruited. Ingrid Sharapova worked as a recruitment consultant for a year before deciding to train as

an accountant.

3. Several audit clients are experiencing staff shortages, and it has been suggested that temporary staff assignments

could be offered. It is envisaged that a number of audit managers or seniors could be seconded to clients for

periods not exceeding six months, after which time they would return to Becker & Co.

Required:

Identify and explain the ethical and practice management implications in respect of:

(a) A business arrangement with Murray Co. (7 marks)
