Researchers have recently found a connection between disease and stressful situations. To
test this theory, psychologists are trying to find a link between the brain and the immune system.

The immune system in our bodies fights the bacteria and viruses which cause disease. There- fore, whether or not we are likely to get various diseases depends on how well our immune system works. Biologists used to think that the immune system was a separate, independent part of our bodies. Recently, however, they have found that our brain can affect our immune system. This discovery indicates that there may be a connection between emotional factors, such as stress or depression, and illness.

Although many doctors in the past suspected a connection between emotional factor and disease, they had no proof. Scientists have only recently discovered how the brain and the immune sys- tem function. Before this, no one could see a link between them. As a result, medical science never seriously considered the idea that psychological factors could cause disease.

Several recent studies showed a connection between stress and illness, for example, researchers went to an American military school to study the students. They found that the sick students there had a lot of academic pressure and wanted to achieve, but they were not very good students. In a similar study, researchers studied a group of student nurses and found that the nurses who developed cold sores were the ones who described themselves as generally unhappy people.

In addition to these results, which support their theory, researchers are also looking for proof that stress can damage the immune system. Researchers studied recently bereaved people, i. e. , people whose loved ones have just died, because they are more likely to become ill or die. By examining the immune system of recently bereaved people, the researchers made an important discovery. They examined some white blood cells which are an important part of the immune system. They were not functioning properly. The fact that they were not working correctly indicates that severe psycho- logical stress, such as a loved one's death, may damage an important part of our immune system.

There is still no positive proof of a connection between the immune system and psychological factors. Researchers also say that the results of the studies on bereaved people could have a different explanation. For example, bereaved people often sleep and eat less than normal, or may drink alcohol or take medication. These factors can also affect the immune system. More research is needed to clearly establish the connection between the immune system and psychological factors.

The study on the military school students indicated that ______.

A.life in the school was very stressful

B.disease could be caused by psychological factors

C.the good students were likely to fall ill

D.stress often made students unhappy

The Major Currencies in the World

The currencies of the world's major economies have names and backgrounds that are as diverse as the countries themselves.

The dollar is the name for the currency used in many countries including the United States , Canada, and Australia. It gets its name from a silver coin minted during the Middle Ages in a small valley, or "Thal" , in Bohemia called Joachimathal. Just a sausage Frankfurt called "Joachimsthaler" or simply " Thaler" , and came to be called " dollar" in English.

The pound, used in Britain, Egypt, and Lebanon among others, refers to the weight used in determining the value of coins, based on precious metals such as gold or sterling. The penny has the same origin as the word pawn, found in terms such as pawn shop , and originally meant "to pledge". A penny , like any currency , is a " pledge " of value.

In Italy and Turkey , the currency is called lira. The word is based on the Latin lira, meaning "pound" and once again referring to the weight of the original coins.

In Spanish , the word meaning " weight" , peso is used to describe the coins that were based on a certain weight of gold or silver. Originally, there were gold coins called peso de oro and silver ones called peso de plata. In Spain , the currency is called peseta, meaning "small peso". The word peso is used to describe the currency in many Spanish-speaking countries in Latin America.

In Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, the word for crown-krone in Denmark and Norway, krona in Sweden-is used to describe the currency that was originally minted by the king and queen, with royal crowns stamped on the earlier coins. Today, the crown has been replaced by other symbols , but the name remams.

The franc, used in France, Switzerland, and other countries and territories,is based on the early coins used in France, that bore the Latin inscription franconium rex , meaning "king of the Franks". The com, as well as the country, took its name from one of the original tribes that settled in the area, the Franks.

The German mark and Finnish markka derive their name from the small marks that were cut into coins to indicate their precious metal content. The German mark, deutsche mark in German ,is often called by its shortened name , D-mark.

The ancient Chinese word yuan meant "round", or "round thing". The name of the Japanese currency, the yen, and the name of the Chinese currency, the yuan , both derived from the old Chinese word, refer to the round shape of the original coins.

Problem may arise when using the plural forms of these currencies. Most take the English plural "s", for example , pounds , dollars , francs , Deutschmarks , etc. However , some are invariable: yuan, yen, baht, and rand. Others keep the plural form of the language spoken in the country of origin: lira-lire , krone-kroner, krona-kronor , markka-markkaa , etc.

Currencies are said to be convertible or invertible. Semi-convertible currencies can only be bought or sold through a country's central bank for documented commercial transactions. The exchange rates are fixed. Semi-convertible currencies are typical of third world countries.

A hard currency is one which is strong and unlikely to fall in value. A soft currency is one from a country with a week balance of payments and for which there is little demand.

Charity Shops in the UK are small shops which sell a variety of items donated by the p
ublic and the money made helps that charity to continue its valuable work. Charity shops are usually run by volunteers, people giving their time voluntarily to help the charity. Shopping in charity shops has many benefits, for the charity, and for the shopper! I like buying things in charity shops for many reasons which I am going to share with you. Firstly, items sold in charity shops are generally a lot cheaper than in high street stores. Yes, this is because they are used, but, having volunteered in a charity shop myself, I know that only really good quality items get put out to sell to the public. You can always find a bargain in a charity shop, from a new top to a pair of shoes, a handbag to a piece of jewellery. Secondly, if a charity shop has a lot of donations coming in, they generally change the stock on a daily basis, which means that there is always a variety of items to choose from. I’m always impressed that I can go into the same charity shop two days in a row and some of the stock will have been changed. Thirdly, you can find interesting treasures in charity shops. Especially when it comes to bric-a-brac items. There was once a very old fashioned sewing machine donated to the charity shop I volunteered in, and it was worth quite a bit of money, but it was sold the same day for five pounds! You will be very surprised with what you can find. Finally, knowing that the money you are spending in charity shops is going to a good cause is a great reason to shop there. There are many charities in the UK which rely on charity shops to fund what they do. The main ones in the UK are Sue Ryder Care which need money to keep their homes open, Cancer Research UK, the RSPCA and Oxfam. I would recommend shopping in charity shops, even very occasionally, because you never know how big a difference buying one small thing might make!

(1)Charity shops in the UK are run in the same way as other shops.

(2)The author of the article loves shopping in charity shops because she was short of money.

(3)Since the items in charity shops are usually used, they are no good.

(4)Charity shops in the UK get funds from the government.

(5)The author suggests people go shopping in charity shops to make a difference.
