材料:A typical example of a hydraulic governor is the Woodward. This has adjustable droop

材料:

A typical example of a hydraulic governor is the Woodward. This has adjustable droop for parallel operation and it is fitted with a speed-adjusting control . If required it can be fitted with a synchronizing motor to provide remote control from a switchboard.

A gear pump driven from the engine supplies oil under pressure to accumulator pistons under which is a by-pass to regulate maximum pressure. One branch supplies oil which acts on top of the power piston, the pressure always tending to turn the terminal shaft to shut off fuel, while the other branch supplies oil to the pilot valve which is operated by the linkage from the fly weights above.

Should the speed of the engine decrease due to increased load the flyweights will move towards their center of rotation and lower the position of the pilot valve plunger, admitting oil pressure from the bottom of the power piston. Since, however, the area on the bottom is much greater than the top the net resultant force causes the piston to move upwards. This operates the power lever turning the terminal shaft which varies the cut-off point in the fuel pump through linkage, but as the power piston moves up, the actuating compensating piston moves down.

Oil under this piston is now forced through the needle valve to the receiving compensating piston, raising the outer end of the floating lever and the pilot valve plunger until it has returned to its normal position. This stops further movement of the terminal shaft so that the fuel control is now set in a position corresponding to the increased fuel required to run the engine at normal speed under the increased load.

问题:

This passage is mainly about ___.

A.what type of governor should be provided when the engine is used for electric power generation

D.how the fuel pumps work

The oil from the gear pump will ___. ① be supplied to the accumulator ② act on the power piston ③ be supplied to the pilot valveA.①

B.①②

C.②③

D.①②③

Which of the following is true about the Woodward discussed?A.It is a kind of mechanical governor.

B.It can not be used for parallel operation.

C.It has speed droop.

D.It may only be manually controlled from a switch boar

E.

When the speed of the engine decreases due to increased load, which of the following will NOT happen?A.The flyweights move towards their center

B.The pilot valve plunger moves towards its normal position

C.The power piston moves downwards until it returns to its normal position

D.The terminal shaft moves to a new position

Part A

Directions: Read the following three texts. Answer the questions on each text by choosing A, B, C or D. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1.

The United States Congress is a bicameral legislature. Two Houses-Senate and House of Representatives make the laws. Before a bill may be sent to the President to sign, both houses must approve. When great agreement exists on a bill, the law moves quickly. However, most suggested laws are complex and relate to interests and conflicts which need debate and careful consideration.

Both houses of Congress use the committee system to handle the numerous bills. A bill is referred to the committee responsible for that category -- whether taxation, foreign affairs, housing or whatever. In the committee the bill is studied, arguments are collected for and against, and advice is gathered from experts on the subject. Citizens have the chance to influence legislation through the committee system. If the committee votes favorably, the bill goes before the entire house. Usually, committee approval means favorable action by the Senate and House of Representatives.

As a result, membership on the more important committees is eagerly sought. How long a senator or representative has served in Congress is most important in assigning committee memberships. Usually the majority political party receives a majority of the memberships of each committee. In this way the party controls decisions because the real work and power of Congress lies in the system of committees. Some people protest that this system restricts laws, but most see this as the system that works best.

By using the context and word part clues, we may conclude that "bicameral" means _______.

A.Republicans and Democrats

B.two Houses

C.congressional system

D.law making procedure

China's Ministry of Finance said it will introduce tax breaks for certain housing transa

China's Ministry of Finance said it will introduce tax breaks for certain housing transactions from Nov.1, 2008 and relax mortgage (抵押)rates for first-time home buyers, the moves could help stabilize the country’s property market.

The ministry said the measures, which had been widely anticipated, are intended to help the general public, particularly the poor. But their effects could support housing purchases and help developers as well.

The government data showed that the growth of investments in real-estate development has slowed in recent months.Urban property prices slowed for the eighth month in a row in September to the lowest increase in more than three years.

Among the moves, China will suspend the stamp duty (印花税)on purchases and sales of individual homes, and the value-added tax on land for individual home sales.

It will also cut the deed tax (契税)rate to 1% for first-time homebuyers purchasing homes that are 90 square meters or smaller, lowering housing transaction costs.

The People’s Bank of China said it will lower the floor on mortgage rates to 0.7 times its benchmark (基准)lending rates for individuals buying their first ordinary homes for their own use, from 0.85 times now.It will also adjust the minimum down payment requirement to 20% of the purchase price on such transactions.

The National Development and Reform. Commission (NDRC)said property prices in 70 of China’s large and medium-sized cities rose 3.5% in September from a year earlier, down from August’s 5.3% rise.

However, the Chinese government has already been busy using fiscal (财政的)policy to drive economic growth. The state is making great efforts to tide over the current housing market downturn arising from the global financial crisis.

The following are all bad reading habits EXCEPT __________.

For many people today, reading is no longer relaxation. To keep up their work they must read letters, reports, trade publications, interoffice communications, not to mention newspapers and magazines: a never-ending flood of words. In getting a job or advancing in one, the ability to read and comprehend quickly can mean the difference between success and failure. Yet the unfortunate fact is that most of us are poor readers. Most of us develop poor reading habits at an early age, and never get over them. The main problem lies in language itself—words. Single words have little meaning until they are combined into phrases, sentences and paragraphs. Unfortunately, however, the untrained reader does not read groups of words. He reads one word at a time, often regressing to reread words or passages. Regression, or looking back over what you have just read, is a common bad habit in reading. Another habit which slows down the speed of reading is vocalization—sounding each word either orally or mentally as one reads. To overcome these bad habits, some reading clinics use a device called accelerator (加速器), which moves a bar down the page at a predetermined speed. The bar is set at a slightly faster rate than the reader finds comfortable, in order to “stretch” him. The accelerator forces the reader to read fast, making word-by-word reading, regression and vocalization virtually impossible. At first, comprehension is sacrificed for speed. But when you learn to read ideas, you will not only read faster, but your comprehension will improve. Many people have found their reading skills improved a lot after some training.

A、regression

B、reading for ideas only

C、vocalization

D、word-by-word reading

Between 1886 and 1914, Canada received over two million immigrants. The majority of them

were from Eastern Europe. The government welcomed these people by offering them free farmland in the West However, Canada immigration policy was not equal for Asian immigrants. The Canadian government passed two laws to prevent Chinese immigration. In 1885, the Canadian government passed the first law to prevent Chinese immigration. The law forced every Chinese person entering Canada to pay a $50 enty fee. The government introduced this head tax to satisfy Caucasian laborers who felt that Chinese immigrants Were competing for their jobs. The head tax was a burden for Chinese immigrants, but it did not prevent them from coming to Canada. For many of these poor Chinese laborers, they could earn more money there than in China. They were willing to borrow the money to pay for the overseas trip and the head tax. The Canadian government rased the head tax to S100 in 1900, then to $500 in 1903. The Canadian government passed its most restrictive immigration law in 1923. That year, the Chinese Immigration Act prevented all Chinese except ficers, merchants, and students from entering Canada. The Act was the result of pressure from ant-Asian groups. These groups felt that the head tax was insufficient because Chinese laborers were still coming to Canada. The effectively stopped Chinese immigration from 1923 to 1947. During the 24-year period, only 44 Chinese entered Canada finally.

Directions: Read the following text carefully and then translate the underlined segments into Chinese. (10 points)

(46)Culture, in a broad sense, means the total way of life of a people, including the patterns of belief, customs, institutions, techniques, and language that characterize the life of the group. As culture is so inclusive, it permeates virtually every aspect of human life and influences predominantly people's behavior, including linguistic behavior.

(47)When we learn a new word we tend to look for its meaning in the word itself; however, in addition to its dictionary meanings, the same word may stir up different associations in different people.Take the word dog for example. In the United States, the word dog in most instances conjures up an image of a furry, domesticated family pet. In some areas of the world, such as South Korea, however, dogs are considered to be a culinary amenity and often are eaten. Therefore, the word dog elicits a quite different meaning because of different cultural experiences. This example indicates that language is heavily tinted with its culture.

(48)From the above, we can infer that a language not only expresses facts, ideas, or events which represent shared world knowledge of its people, but also reflects the people's attitudes beliefs, world outlooks etc.In a word, language expresses cultural reality. When a child acquires his mother tongue, he also acquires a language-specific culture and becomes socialized in certain ways. If he moves to another community or country, he may be recognized easily not as a member of the local community group but as a newcomer from the ways he uses his language. This implies that language embodies cultural identity.

As language is tightly intertwined with culture, learning a language is inseparable from learning its culture. (49)When learning a foreign language, we should not only learn the mere imitation of the pronunciation, grammar, words and idioms but also learn to see the world as native speakers do, that is to say, learn the wags in which the foreign language reflects the ideas, customs, and behavior. of that society, learn to understand their "language of the mind".We need to learn enough about the language's culture so that we can communicate in the target language properly to achieve not only the linguistic competence but also communicative competence. This is of great significance in learning a foreign language. (50)Otherwise the ignorance of cultural differences between mother tongue and target language will inevitable create barriers in learning the target language, thus causing some misunderstandings and confusions frequently.

Cars of 2000 will travel the nation’ s highways in never-before-dreams-of safety, comf

ort, and convenience. These cars will float along never touching the ground, and therefore will have no need for wheels. Annoying highway vibrations, caused by the rotations of the disc-and-tire wheels, will be things of the past. The coming highway passenger cars will literally fly above the road, supported on columns of air compressed by

turbine-driven fans.

The car without wheels has been called a “flying car” , and, in a sense, that’ s just what it is; however, it will not back out of the family garage, start down the street, and then suddenly go quickly upward heading for some distant point. On the contrary, to avoid problems in aerial navigation, the wheel-less vehicle probably will travel no more than three inches above road surface. It will travel over fairly rough road and even over smooth water.

The inevitable problems of maritime regulations, severe weather conditions, and running out of fuel in remote areas all will require new concepts of operation, servicing, and vehicle regulation.

D、will u s e wheels without tires

2.Cars of the future will run _______ .

A、without annoying noise

B、without fuel

C、much more smoothly

D、on a number of fans

3.The car without wheels has been called a “flying car” because _______ .

A、it travels a few inches above the ground

B、it can fly as a plane does

C、it moves at a very high speed

D、it can travel over smooth water

4.Where is a wheel-less car least fit to travel_____ .

A、Over soft land

B、Over rough country roads

C、Over highways

D、Over waterfalls

5.Wheel-less cars will _______ .

A、eliminate all traffic problems

B、create new traffic problems

C、eliminate parking problems

第8题

The domestic economy in the United States expanded in a remarkably vigorous and steady fas
hion. The revival in consumer confidence was reflected in the higher proportion of incomes spent for goods and services and the marked increase in consumer willingness to take on installment debt. A parallel strengthening in business psychology was manifested in a stepped-up rate of plant and equipment spending and a gradual pickup in expenses for inventory. Confidence in the economy was also reflected in the strength of the stock market and in the stability of the bond market. For the years as a whole, consumer and business sentiment benefited from the ease in East-West tensions.

The bases of the business expansion were to be found mainly in the stimulative monetary and fiscal policies that had been pursued. Moreover, the restoration of sounder liquidity positions and tighter management control of production efficiency had also helped lay the groundwork for a strong expansion. In addition, the economic policy moves made by the President had served to renew optimism on the business outlook while boosting hopes that inflation would be brought under more effective control. Final]y, of course, the economy was able to grow as vigorously as it did because sufficient leeway existed in terms of idle men and machines.

The United States balance of payments deficit declined sharply. Nevertheless, by any other test, the deficit remained very large, and there was actually a substantial deterioration in our trade account to a sizable deficit, almost two-thirds of which was with Japan. While the overall trade performance proved disappointing, there are still good reasons for expecting the delayed impact of devaluation to produce in time a significant strengthening in our trade picture. Given the size of the Japanese component of our trade deficit, however, the outcome will depend importantly on the extent of the corrective measures undertaken by Japan. Also important will be our own efforts in the United States to fashion internal policies consistent with an improvement in our external balance.

The underlying task of public policy for the year ahead--and indeed for the longer run--remained a familiar one: to strike the right balance between encouraging healthy economic growth and avoiding inflationary pressures. With the economy showing sustained and vigorous growth, and with the currency crisis highlighting the need to improve our competitive posture internationally, the emphasis seemed to be shifting to the problem of inflation. The Phase Three Program of wage and price restraint can contribute to reducing inflation. Unless productivity growth is unexpectedly large; however, the expansion of real output must eventually begin to slow down to the economy's larger run growth potential if generalized demand pressures on prices are to be avoided.

The author mentions increased installment debt in the first paragraph in order to show ______.

A.the continuing expansion of the economy

B.the growth of consumer purchasing power

C.the consumers' confidence in the economy

D.the soaring consumer incomes for spending
