Key James, Secretary of Health and Human Resources in the Virginia State government, loves
to turn the tables on those who don't think it's possible to be middle-class, conservative, educated and still be truly black. Once, during an abortion debate, a woman in the audience angrily told James she was so middle-class she didn't have a clue about real African American life. "If you understood what these women go through," the woman said, "you would realize that abortion is their only choice."

James then asked the woman to consider a poor black mother on welfare. She already has four children and an alcoholic husband who has all but abandoned the family. Now she discovers another child is on the way. "How would you counsel that woman?" asked James.

"Have an abortion," the woman responded. "That child would have a very poor quality of life."

"I have a vested interest in your answer," James said. "The woman I described was my mother. I was the fifth of six children born into poverty. And, in case you're interested, the quality of my life is just fine!"

Kay James ______.

A.is not a black

B.is a poor black mother

C.has five brothers and sisters

D.has a hard life

2015~2016九年级上册英语期末考试阅读理解C第36-40小题答案

I suppose when you grow up in one place, you have friends whom you’ve known since childhood. But as a child who moved a lot, my oldest friendships are with my cousins.

On our return from Guam, my parents, sisters and I walked off the plane in Alexandria. All my cousins were there to meet us.

I was excited to see them again. The last time I’d seen Don, Sherri and David was two years before. That summer we’d caught fireflies(萤火虫) and watched Don and his friends play a game. Some boys acted like a bull(公牛) with a rope(绳子). His friend held the rope and Don rode on it. When Don fell off, he got up and tried again.

Just like riding that bull, Don put his heart into everything he did. As a young man he was told he got cancer(癌症). But he fought it and never gave up. Like what he did that summer, he held tight(紧紧地) , falling off a few times and trying again. I was excited and proud of my cousin for planning and going after his dream. I wished his ride would have lasted longer.

Mrs Sharp, a large, red-faced woman in her late sixties, has lived in Greenleas, a &

Mrs Sharp, a large, red-faced woman in her late sixties, has lived in Greenleas, a 'new town' in the countryside outside London, since 1958. Before that she lived in Bethnal Green, an area of inner London. She was moved to Greenleas by the local authorities when her old house was demolished (拆除).

She came from a large family with six girls and two boys, and she grew up among brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, grandparents and cousins. When she married her boyfriend from school at eighteen, they went on living with her parents, and her first child was brought up more by her mother than by herself, because she always worked.

As the family grew, they moved out of their parents' house to a flat. It was in the next street, and their life was still that of the extended family. "All my family used to live around Denby Street," said Mrs Sharp, "and we were always in and out of each other's houses." When she went to the shops, she used to call in on her mother to see if she wanted anything. Every day she would visit one sister or another and see a nephew or niece at the corner shop or in the market.

"You always knew 90% of the people you saw in the street every day, either they were related to you or you were at school with them," she said.

When her babies were born (she had two sons and a daughter), she said, "All my sisters and neighbours would help - they used to come and make a cup of tea, or help in some other way." And every Saturday night there was a family party. It was at Mrs Sharp's mother's house. "Of course we all know each other very well. You have to learn to get on with each other. I had one neighbour who was always poking(管闲事) her nose into our business. She was forever asking questions and gossiping (拨弄是非). But you had to put up with everyone, whatever they were like."

第10题

Looking back on my childhood, I am convinced that naturalists are born, not made. Alt
hough we were brought up in the same way, my brothers and sisters soon abandoned their pressed flowers and insects. Unlike them, I had no ear for music and languages. I was not an early reader and I could not do mental arithmetic.

Before World War I, we spent our summer holidays in Hungary. I have nothing but the dim memory of the house we lived in, of my room and my toys. Nor do I recall clearly the large family of grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins who gathered next door. But I do have a crystal-clear memory of the dogs, the farm animals, the local bird and above all, the insects.

I am a naturalist, not a scientist. I have a strong love of the natural world and my enthusiasm had led me into varied investigation. I love discussing my favorite topics and enjoy burning the midnight oil while reading about other people’s observations and discoveries. Then something happens that brings these observations together in my curious mind. Suddenly you fancy you see the answer to the riddle, because it all seems to fit together. This has resulted in my publishing 300 papers and books, which some might honor with the title of scientific research. But curiosity, a keen eye, a good memory and enjoyment of the animal and plant world do not make a scientist: one of the outstanding and essential qualities required is self-discipline, a quality I lack. A scientist requires not only self-discipline but also hard-training, determination and a goal. A scientist, up to a point, can be made. A naturalist is born. If you can combine the two, there can be little doubt that you get the best of both worlds.

1). Which of the following is characteristic of the author’s childhood?

A. he suffered from serious loss of hearing.

B. he didn’t get on well with his brothers and sisters.

C. he showed strong interest in flowers and insects.

D. he was good at reading at an early age.

2). The author fails to remember his relatives clearly in that _______.

A. he was too young then

B. he had a poor memory

C. he spent little time living with them

D. he was absorbed in observing nature

3). It can be concluded that one essential quality required by a scientist is _______.

A. self-discipline

B. a powerful memory

C. being enthusiastic

D. having a sharp eye

4). The author believes that he is ________.

A. a scientist as well as a naturalist

B. not a naturalist but a scientist

C. not a scientist but a naturalist

D. neither a scientist nor a naturalist

5). It can be inferred that it is almost impossible to _______.

A. make someone become a naturalist

B. make someone become a scientist

C. tell the difference between science and nature

D. take an interest in both science and nature
