Not long ago, there lived in Auckland a working family who dreamed about a house of thei

The worker and his wife hopefully went to one of these companies(2)this wonderful offer. And the man in the office said. “Yes, sure. You bring along $1,000 and we can(3)you with a new house.”

So the worker and his wife had to work hard and in twelve months’ time they returned to the building man with $1,000. But the man in the office said, “Look, I’m sorry, (4)we’ll need $1,500 now. Costs have gone up since we saw you last, you know.”

The couple thought it over and decided it would not take very long to save the extra $500 if they worked hard.

In six moths they worked(5)overtime and saved the $500 in spite of the high rent they had to pay for their flat. Back to the building man they(6)with their $1,500. But to their surprise he (7)the deposit was now $3,000.

Now somewhat wiser, the worker said, “And the next time, I dare say we’ll find the deposit rising once more. How have we (8)save the extra $1,500?”

“Well”, said the man, “I think we can stabilize the situation for about twelve months. By the time you come with $3,000, we will have had the house(9)for you.

The couple left, sad at heart as they saw their dream house (10) . By the time they had saved the extra $1.500, no doubt the deposit would have become still higher, maybe $5,000, then $10,000 and then…!

When I arrived, it was early morning and it was raining. I looked to the east—the sky was becoming grey. I got out of the car, went through a gate and walked along a dark path. There was nothing to see, but I knew it was there. After about a mile, a stranger appeared beside the path. “Am I going the right way?” I asked. He knew where I was going. “Yes,” he replied. “you’ll get there in five minutes.” Finally, I came to some rocks and stopped. I looked over them, but it was silent and there was no sign of it. Suddenly, the rain stopped and the clouds cleared. The sun rose behind me and shone on the rocks. Far below me, the ground fell away and down to a river. I was looking across one of the wonders of the natural world –the Grand Canyon.I looked down to the Colorado River, a silver stream nearly one mile below me. If you put the two tallest buildings in the world on top of each other at the bottom of the canyon, they still would not reach the top. Then I looked across to the other side of the canyon. It was about fifteen miles away, maybe more. Finally, I looked to my left and to my right, and on both sides the canyon went far away for more than 200 miles. The Grand Canyon was not just big. It was huge! I remained by the canyon for about half an hour, and I asked myself, “Is the Grand Canyon the greatest wonder of the natural world?” I certainly know the answer. What do you think?

Joe liked hunting very much. Last month he came back from Africa and said that he would no
t go hunting any longer. He told me his experience as follows(如下).

One morning I was walking in the forest and suddenly saw a lion hidden in the grass, less than three metres away. With a terrible roar(吼叫), he leaped(跳跃)toward me. I aimed my gun at it and shot. But I had no practice in shooting at moving objects at such a short distance. I didn't hit him. Only by the grace(恩典)of God, the lion made such a long leap that he went flying over my head and landed five metres away from me. Just then another hunter came running and the lion quickly ran away from me.

I returned to the camp and began to practise shooting at moving objects at short distances. It was going well and I was anxious to find some animal as my target. What I saw later was much dreadful and made me decide to give up hunting. I looked up over the fence, and there at the edge of the forest was the same lion. The lion was practicing short jumps.
