Quicklink Ltd operates in the distribution and haulage industry and has achieved significant growth since its formation

in 1997. Its main activities comprise the door-to-door delivery of mail, parcels and industrial machinery.

The information contained in notes (i–vii) below relates to Quicklink Ltd in respect of the year ended 31 May

2005 and changes planned in the year ending 31 May 2006.

(i) Contracted clients were charged at the following rates during the year ended 31 May 2005: Mail £6 per delivery,

Parcels £10 per delivery and Machinery £200 per delivery.

(ii) Rates for non-contract clients during each of the years ended 31 May 2005 and year ending 31 May 2006,

were/are based upon the contracted client rates per delivery plus an additional percentage fee per delivery

charged to non-contract clients as follows:

(iv) Employee salaries were paid throughout the year ended 31 May 2005 at a rate of £26,400 per employee, per

annum.

(v) Sundry operating costs (excluding fuel and salaries) of Quicklink Ltd amounted to £3,000,000 during the year

ended 31 May 2005.

(vi) The board of directors expect that for the year ending 31 May 2006 the following will apply:

(a) contract rates of Quicklink Ltd business will increase by 5%

(b) sales volumes are expected to remain at the same level as in the year ended 31 May 2005

(c) salaries and other operating expenses will increase by 4%.

(vii) The board of directors agreed to purchase Celer Transport, an unincorporated business, which was founded in

December 2001. The purchase took effect on 1 June 2005. Celer Transport has main activities comprising the

delivery of mail, parcels and processed food. The managing director of Quicklink Ltd has expressed his view that

‘the acquisition of the Celer Transport business would constitute a good strategic move even though it is expected

to make a loss of £50,000 during the year ending 31 May 2006’.

The information contained in notes (viii–xii) below relates to the business of Celer Transport in respect of the year

ending 31 May 2006:

(viii) A distinctive competence of the Celer Transport business relates to its success in winning contracts with major

food producers. Each contract is for a fixed term of three years and all contracts were renewed on 1 June 2005.

(ix) (1) The sales volume of mail and parcel deliveries to Celer Transport clients is expected to increase by 10% per

in application during the year ended 31 May 2005 as the basis of charging for mail and parcel deliveries to

Celer Transport clients during the year ending 31 May 2006. This is due to the fact that Quicklink Ltd had

higher client billing rates than Celer Transport and the board of directors recognised that it would have been

difficult to adopt company-wide billing rates with effect from 1 June 2005.

(2) During the year ended 31 May 2005 the billing rates of Celer Transport in respect of contract and noncontract

mail and parcel deliveries were 90% of the level of the rates charged by Quicklink Ltd.

(x) Fuel requirements for the Celer Transport business activities are forecast to cost £0·12 per kilometre for mail and

parcel deliveries and £0·60 per kilometre for deliveries of processed food. The fuel required for Celer Transport

business during the year ending 31 May 2006 cannot be provided under the current agreement entered into by

Quicklink Ltd as detailed in note (iii). Each Celer Transport vehicle is in use for 340 days per annum.

(xi) All Celer Transport employees will be paid on the same basis as Quicklink Ltd employees.

(xii) Sundry operating costs (excluding fuel and salaries) of the Celer Transport business will amount to £1,990,340.

998. Clifford is a higher

rate taxpayer who has realised taxable capital gains in 2007/08 in excess of his capital gains tax annual exemption.

Clifford moved into Amanda’s house in London on the day they were married. Clifford’s own house in Oxford, where

he had lived since acquiring it for £129,400 on 1 August 1996, has been empty since that date although he and

Amanda have used it when visiting friends. Clifford has been offered £284,950 for the Oxford house and has decided

Amanda began working for Shearer plc, a quoted company, on 1 June 2006 having had a two year break from her

career. She earns an annual salary of £38,600 and was paid a bonus of £5,750 in August 2006 for agreeing to

come and work for the company. On 1 August 2006 Amanda was provided with a fully expensed company car,

including the provision of private petrol, which had a list price when new of £23,400 and a CO2 emissions rate of

187 grams per kilometre. Amanda is required to pay Shearer plc £22 per month in respect of the private use of the

car. In June and July 2006 Amanda used her own car whilst on company business. She drove 720 business miles

In the fall of 2006 ,one of our trading companies concluded a substantial rice business with an old customer in Africa. The terms of delivery are : shipment is to be made in equal monthly lots beginning from December,2006 to June,2007 and payment is to be made by irrevocable letter of credit 60 days after the date of the bill of lading. The customer established the L/C in time and all particulars of the rice, such as the name , specifications , unit price,total price and total quantity are in conformity with the contract. But the terms of shipment only stated " the latest date of shipment is June 30 ,to be shipped in several lots".

The staff in our trading company made the first shipment in December according to the quantity stated in the contract. However in order to export more and eam more foreign exchange earlier, they advanced the time of shipment regardless the shipment terms stipulated in the contract. In January 2007 , our company shipped the quantity of the first quarter once , and in February made the third shipment for the rest quantity that should be delivered in the second quarter, since our staff had not found any specifications "shipment is to be made in equal lots" in the L/C. At the same time our bank negotiated against presentation of the stipulated documents and subsequently asked the opening bank to pay for the goods. The opening bank examined the L/C and confirmed that the L/C had no error in it.

After receiving the shipping advice, the African customer found that the delivered quantity of the rice both in the second lot and third lot were not in accordance with the shipment terms stipulated in the contract, so a claim was filed by the customer against our trading company for default shipment. The amount claimed involved the added fees of chartering warehouse for the delivered goods, the interest and other charges etc. The two parties negotiated the compensation for several times, finally our company accepted the opposing party's opinion and agreed that the purchase price for the last two lots was to be paid four months later, that meant our company would receive the payment a few months later than che original stated time. According to Lhe current price in the international market at that time, our trading company suffered the loss equivalent to 10 percent of the original selling price.

Questions :

2 Benny Korere has been employed as the sales director of Golden Tan plc since 1994. He ea
rns an annual salary of

£32,000 and is provided with a petrol-driven company car which has a CO2 emission rate of 187g/km and had a

list price when new of £22,360. In August 2003, when he was first provided with the car, Benny paid the company

£6,100 towards the capital cost of the car. Golden Tan plc does not pay for any of Benny’s private petrol and he is

also required to pay his employer £18 per month as a condition of being able to use the car for private purposes.

On 1 December 2006 Golden Tan plc notified Benny that he would be made redundant on 28 February 2007. On

that day the company will pay him his final month’s salary together with a payment of £8,000 in lieu of the three

remaining months of his six-month notice period in accordance with his employment contract. In addition the

Europe. Summer Glow plc is one of Golden Tan plc’s competitors and one of the most innovative companies in the

industry, although not all of its strategies have been successful.

Benny has agreed to join Summer Glow plc on 1 September 2007 for an annual salary of £39,000. On the day he

joins the company, Summer Glow plc will grant him an option to purchase 10,000 ordinary shares in the company

for £2·20 per share under an unapproved share option scheme. Benny can exercise the option once he has been

employed for six months but must hold the shares for at least a year before he sells them.

The new job will require Benny to spend a considerable amount of time in London. Summer Glow plc has offered

Benny the exclusive use of a flat that the company purchased on 1 June 2003 for £165,000; the flat is currently

rented out. The flat will be made available from 1 September 2007. The company will pay all of the utility bills

relating to the flat as well as furnishing and maintaining it. Summer Glow plc has also suggested that if Benny would

rather live in a more central part of the city, the company could sell the existing flat and buy a more centrally located

one, of the same value, with the proceeds.

On 15 March 2007 Benny intends to sell 5,800 shares in Mahana plc, a quoted company, for £24,608. His

1 Your client, Island Co, is a manufacturer of machinery used in the coal extraction indus
try. You are currently planning

the audit of the financial statements for the year ended 30 November 2007. The draft financial statements show

revenue of $125 million (2006 – $103 million), profit before tax of $5·6 million (2006 – $5·1 million) and total

assets of $95 million (2006 – $90 million). Your firm was appointed as auditor to Island Co for the first time in June

2007.

Island Co designs, constructs and installs machinery for five key customers. Payment is due in three instalments: 50%

is due when the order is confirmed (stage one), 25% on delivery of the machinery (stage two), and 25% on successful

installation in the customer’s coal mine (stage three). Generally it takes six months from the order being finalised until

the final installation.

At 30 November, there is an amount outstanding of $2·85 million from Jacks Mine Co. The amount is a disputed

stage three payment. Jacks Mine Co is refusing to pay until the machinery, which was installed in August 2007, is

running at 100% efficiency.

One customer, Sawyer Co, communicated in November 2007, via its lawyers with Island Co, claiming damages for

injuries suffered by a drilling machine operator whose arm was severely injured when a machine malfunctioned. Kate

Shannon, the chief executive officer of Island Co, has told you that the claim is being ignored as it is generally known

that Sawyer Co has a poor health and safety record, and thus the accident was their fault. Two orders which were

placed by Sawyer Co in October 2007 have been cancelled.

Work in progress is valued at $8·5 million at 30 November 2007. A physical inventory count was held on

17 November 2007. The chief engineer estimated the stage of completion of each machine at that date. One of the

major components included in the coal extracting machinery is now being sourced from overseas. The new supplier,

Locke Co, is located in Spain and invoices Island Co in euros. There is a trade payable of $1·5 million owing to Locke

Co recorded within current liabilities.

All machines are supplied carrying a one year warranty. A warranty provision is recognised on the balance sheet at

$2·5 million (2006 – $2·4 million). Kate Shannon estimates the cost of repairing defective machinery reported by

customers, and this estimate forms the basis of the provision.

Kate Shannon owns 60% of the shares in Island Co. She also owns 55% of Pacific Co, which leases a head office to

Island Co. Kate is considering selling some of her shares in Island Co in late January 2008, and would like the audit

to be finished by that time.
