Have you noticed the courage buried in the word encourage? To create a culture in which innovation flourishes takes courage. Determined innovators are always courageous enough to establish a culture in which innovation is greatly encouraged and rewarded. Here are three ways to do that.

Put innovation at the heart of strategy, and persist it in every message. Think of innovation strategy as a pyramid: big bets at the top, a few projects in development in the middle, and a broad base of continuous improvements, lasting contributions, and early-stage new ideas at the bottom.

Define jobs around innovation. Make it a job prerequisite. Consider 3M’s move to become one of the first companies to tell professionals that they could spend 15 percent of their time on projects of their own choosing. Now many high-tech companies know that they can’t get the best talent without providing this kind of flexibility. And some of those self-selected, self-organized projects might even result in a blockbuster product or line of business. For 3M, it was the Post-it note.

Recognize innovation in every part of the company. To build a culture of creativity and innovation, Gillette developed an innovation fair in which every unit could show off its most promising new concepts. It shows that everyone has a role to play in a culture of innovation.

To go from idea to successful innovation requires a great deal of support and collaboration. When people are surrounded by constant communication and encouragement, they can find the courage to try, fail, redo, and try again.

Digital Natives

David is not very comfortable with new technology and he does not have many gadgets. Lucy loves new technology. She owns a games console, an MP3 player, and a mobile phone with a built-in digital camera. David is a teacher. Lucy is his student.

Like Lucy, many children grow up using computers almost every day and often know more about technology than adults. Educator Marc Prensky calls children like Lucy “digital natives”. Digital natives can quickly learn how to use new gadgets and new software, while non-digital natives spend a lot of time reading manuals and worrying about computer viruses. In fact, many parents try to save time by asking their children to teach them how to use new technology!

The divide between digital natives and non-digital natives can cause problems at school because students and teachers grow up with very different ideas about technology. Many teachers think that playing computer games is a waste of time and that technology has made children unable to concentrate. However, many students think their classes are slow and boring, and want to use computers to study.

Prensky believes that digital natives have learned a lot from technology, but that they learn things in a different way. For example, reading a website is different from reading a book, so digital natives are good at finding the information they need and choosing what they want to read. So perhaps teachers need to change the way they teach and use more technology in class – because the number of digital natives will keep increasing!

1.David is a digital native.()

2.Marc Prensky is interested in teaching with technology.()

3.Digital natives are comfortable using laptops and flash drives.()

4.Many teachers think computer games are only for having fun or killing time.()

5.People read books and websites in the same way.()

When you read in English, you are likely to come across words or phrases that you don't un
derstand. Looking these up in a dictionary can be very time-consuming and frustrating, how ever. This makes it difficult to enjoy reading, and it is impractical as well, if you have to read pages at a time.

When you read in your native language, what do you do if you come across a word that you don't know? You may occasionally check with a dictionary, but most of the time you guess the meanings of unfamiliar words from the context. You can do the same when you read in English.

If you don't know the word "euphemism" and you read it in the sentence, "Pass away is a euphemism for die." How do you figure out what it means without looking in a dictionary? If you look at the other major words in the sentence--pass away and die--you see that they mean almost the same thing, but that pass away is an indirect or less harsh way of saying die. There fore, a euphemism must be an indirect or less harsh way of saying something. You are able to figure out the meaning of a word that you didn't know by looking for clues in the context.

Sometimes an author will tell you the meaning of an unfamiliar word, or restate the idea in a way that gives you a clue to the meaning of the unfamiliar word. The sentence "His ideas are really half-baked; he just does not think them out well," is an example of a restatement of the idea. The second half of the sentence restates the idea of the first, so half-baked means "not thought out well".

An author may also give an example or illustration of an unfamiliar word. In the sentence, "I was very apprehensive, as if I were waiting to see the dentist," the feeling being described is compared with the common experience of waiting to see the dentist. How do you feel when waiting to see the dentist? You probably feel nervous about what might happen, and that's what apprehensive means.

Another kind of clue to look for is a word or phrase that is contrasted with the unfamiliar word. In the sentence, "When you remember how shy he used to be, it's hard to believe how outgoing he is now." the word shy, which you probably know, is contrasted with the word outgoing, which may be unfamiliar. Since the opposite of shy is friendly, or eager to mix socially, you can guess what outgoing probably means.

You Should keep in mind that it is not always necessary to understand the exact meaning of a word when you are reading. If you are able to get a general idea of the meaning of an unfamiliar word, that is sufficient for most types of reading.

In the author's opinion, looking up all the words you don't know when you are reading in English is______.

A.a very difficult and impractical job

B.not reasonable and interesting

C.a waste of time and a bore to you

D.impossible because you haven't time
