Most animals have little connection with animals of different kind, unless they hunt t
hem for food. Sometimes, however, two kinds of animals come together in a partnership (伙伴关系 ) which does good to both of them. You may have noticed some birds sitting on the backs of sheep. This is not because they want a ride, but because they find easy food in the parasites (寄生虫 ) on sheep. The sheep allow the birds to do so because they remove the cause of discomfort. So although they can manage without each other, they do better together.

Sometimes an animal has a plant partner. The relationship develops until the two partners cannot manage without each other. This is so in the corals (珊瑚 ) of the sea. In their skins they have tiny plants act as "dustman", taking some of the waste products form. the corals and giving in return oxygen which the animal needs to breathe. If the plants are killed, or are ever prevented from lighting so that they cannot live normally, the corals will die.

根据下列短文,回答下列各题。 Climate.more than any other single factor, determines the dist
ribution of life on earth.Cli-matic boundaries establish the limits which organisms can survive.Plants, even more than ani-mals.must be well adapted to climate in order to survive. They cannot move about or take shel-ter but must be equipped to endure whatever weather conditions are likely to Occur. In the harsh conditions of the tundra, for example, low growing mosses, lichens, and a few flowering plants allhug the ground for shelter from icy winds. Animals, despite their ability to move about and find shelter, are just as much influenced by climate as plants are.Creatures such as the camel and the penguin are so highly specializedthat they have an extremely limited distribution。Others, such as bears are flexible"enough to a.dapt to a broad range of climates.Oceandwelling organisms are just as sensitive to climaticchanges--in this case temperature and salinity--as land animals.Reef corals can survive onlyin clear warm seawater.Certain foraminifers are so sensitive to changes in their environmentthat their presence can be taken as an index of sea temperature.Human beings are among theleast specialized of all animals and can live almost anywhere.Their clothes and their homes actas a sort of“miniature climate”that Can be taken with them everywhere. According to the passage, plants on the tundra grow in the ground_________.

A.to avoid being eaten by arctic animals

B.because fertilizer is not readily available

l that can do this? It has wings like a bird. But it doesn’t look like a bird. It’s a bat.Bats have fur mostly all over, but not on their wings. Some bats have black, brown, red, or yellow fur. These live in dark places, like caves. Other bats live in trees. Many of these bats are part white and part another color. Some of them are green. There are more than 900 kinds of bats. The biggest ones are called flying foxes. Their heads look like little brown fox heads. The wings of these bats can be over 5 feet across. But other kinds can be very little. The wings of the smallest bats are only 1/2 foot across. In the day, bats hang by their feet and sleep a lot. At times they clean their fur. Some of the time they care for their babies. Mostly they sleep. But when the sun goes down, they begin to move. At night bats fly around. They try to find food. Bats eat fruit, bugs, plants, fish, and flowers. Some bats use their good hearing to find things in the dark. First they make sounds. The sounds jump off anything around the bats. The sea looks very pretty when the sun is shining on it. It can be very rough when the
re is a strong wind. The sea is very big. It covers three quarters of the globe! The sea is also very deep in some places. There is one spot near the Philippines , where the sea is about 11 kilometers deep. The highest mountain in the world is about 9 kilometers high. If that mountain was put in the sea at that place, there would still be 3 kilometers of water above it! What a deep place! In most parts of the sea, there are plenty of fishes and plants. Some live near the top of the sea. Others live deep down. There are millions of tiny living things that float in the sea. Many fish live by eating them. The sea can be very cold. When the diver goes downwards, the sea becomes colder and colder. When the diver goes deeper, the water exerts greater pressure.

1、There is one spot near the Philippines, where the sea is as deep as ().

A、13 kilometers

B、 9 kilometers

C、 2 kilometers

D、 11 kilometers

2、There are millions of tiny living things that float in the sea, and().

Farms Appear in Cities

When you hear the word “farm”, you may imagine the countryside with cows and crops. But scientists say the farm of the future could be built in tall buildings in some large cities.

It may be difficult to believe, but in fact, the technology for growing crops indoors already exists. Farming in the city is already happening. Some vegetables are already grown in greenhouse. Even the scientists at the South Pole research station can enjoy fresh vegetables they grow in their own greenhouse.

Experts say indoor farming solves many problems. First, traditional farming takes up a lot of land. Growing crops in tall buildings—called vertical farming(垂直农业)—can solve the problem. Also, fruits and vegetables grown indoors would not face serious threats from insects and bad weather.

Though vertical farms don’t exist yet, experts have created a plan for recycling in such farms. The water from indoor fish ponds would be used to water chicken or pigs would be reused as a source of energy.

But experts believe vertical farming is not going to be easy. They say it can be difficult to control climate conditions indoors. Besides, plants differ in their weather and lighting needs. For example, some plants like warm, sunny weather, but other plants prefer cooler temperature.

That’s not to say these difficulties won’t be overcome—but it will take time. Most experts suggest it may take about 5 to 15 years before the first vertical farms could be created.
